Despite his quick recovery from the seizure he suffered on Monday, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. faces a complex diagnosis and a difficult decision.
Because the seizure was his second he had a similar one in 1993 he meets the criteria for epilepsy, and he and his doctors will have to decide whether he should take medication to prevent further seizures, said neurologists not involved in his care. (Neither the chief justice nor his doctors would comment yesterday.)
The decision will involve weighing the risk of more seizures against the risk of side effects from the drugs. Major seizures can be a frightening and traumatic experience for patients and family members. Patients are advised to avoid heights and not to swim alone, and many states bar them from driving until they can provide evidence that the disease is under control.

Was it an illegal seizure?
Remember per the NYT and their fellow travelers, it’s only “bad” when drugs and epilepsy cause conservative judicial decisions, not liberal ones.
It’s not about the seizures. It’s about the blackmail.

Bad luck to the bastard.
2 bad decisions in one week made me wonder if Roberts has a brain tumor or something.
But I can’t trust anything Savage says, as we don’t know what he’ll throw in to increase his ratings.
Especially when you're only holding Jack high, and another player seizure bet and raises you.
Hey, let me tell you about epilepsy. I am one. I haven’t had a seizure since I was approximately 21; then I had several at at my age of 65. I am living proof that the meds affect you. They are strong. You hardly remember what your name is or what you are thinking about. Your memory is so forgetful; you cry. I was out for about 22 days in the hospital. When I woke up I couldn’t walk. I can a little now; but wiil go into rehab. Believe me; it’s miserable.
Does anybody KNOW for sure if Justice Roberts is On Epilepsy meds and if so which particular ones?
Because Anti Seizure, Epilepsy drugs are literally a sledge hammer to a person’s cognitive faculties, and could very well account for this unbelievable decision he delivered on O’Care.
The FDA has both Neurontin and Depakote down for CAUSING PSYCHOSIS.
The decision will involve weighing the risk of more seizures against the risk of side effects from the drugs.
Weigh the risks of having a seizure while crossing a street and being hit by a car, or risk the side effects of the drugs.
Weigh the risks of having a seizure while taking a shower and splitting your skull wide open, or risk the side effects of the drugs.
It’s a no brainer. Take the drugs. I had 4 grand mals before the damn VA doctors finally prescribed Dilantin for me. When I had them there was no chance to sit down or drab something. Down I went, and the crack of my head against the floor could be heard 100 feet away. Better to live with the drugs side effects than suffering major brain damage and ending up a drooling mess in a wheelchair. When I had one and was taken to the VA, I had a big laceration on my scalp where my head hit the floor. Damn VA nurses didn’t even clean it or put a bandage on it. Woke up with blood all over the pillow and my head stuck to the pillow.
Prayers up
He has symptoms of having had a bad trip with Depakote. That means he’s having OTHER problems right along with the seizures ~ or he’d be using the gentler stuff.
Hey, let me tell you about epilepsy. I am one.
And the rest in here are making fun of the condition. Nice of them, eh?
Sounds like it damaged his brain.
Yes, the epi-drugs do make you wonky. The drugs in my case seemed much worse than the seizures. I was working as a head bank teller at the time and being so wonked out by the drug I was on...lets say a lot of money got misplaced. All was recovered, but my realization that I could no longer do my job or handle money was frightening. I ended up quitting.
Two seizures 14 years apart is not something most people would even begin taking drugs over. Not if they did their homework or there was some underlying issue.
Even my own doctor chose to monitor me rather than trying another stronger course of drugs...as the drugs were causing the problem with cognitive functions.
BUT...during the postictal phase of seizures your brain functions are wonked out if you had a major seizure. You will be compromised for 24-72 hours. I have had seizures so severe as I have sat down and waited for God to show up thinking I had died. I won't recall the actual calender date ...even while looking at a calender. I won't recall what I did or what I have to do. The doctor tells me it is rare that I have memories of the postictal phase.
My point here being if Roberts has epilepsy and for some reason his medication is off...it is true...he won't be thinking correctly or clearly.
Not to digress but one fellow who came across our lives was a photocopier salesman who had his first epileptic seizure riding a bicycle on a sidewalk at rush hour near a busy street.
He said he spent several months in the hospital ~ on dilantin ~ then a predecessor to depakote (does same stuff but pretty rough on your system)
Traffic is a really tough environment for a seizure.
If this happens, there needs to be a thorough investigation. If there is no investigation, this could sow the seeds of rebelion.
Look, it’s day one, still, of a terrible assault by the Leftest side of the Supreme Court, against America as we knew it.
Now comes the Establishment Republicans talking about a big win for Romney in November, the rise of the TEA Party to get it done, that this was a GOOD THING politically speaking and how John Roberts is a genius of the highest order for throwing in with the Left on this one.
Nevermind that just yesterday, Lawrence Tribe claimed ole John as a student and expected him to come down on the side of Obamacare, and even Rush was told some time ago that of all the justices to watch, “watch Roberts”.
The Republicans will be rube hunting to win the White House on this crock, throwing some meat to the conservatives, as they stand there quite pleased that conservatives in Congress serve as no threat to their power, and that finally have hoisted a socialist to the top of ticket in their effort to move us to the Left.
Socialism comes of age in our party, and with Marxism already institutionalized to entrap on December 31st at midnight even more of the population by Obama fiat into the nanny state there will be no way to reverse the damages in a time of austerity, when we are owned lock, stock and barrel by China.
Speaking as someone who routinely prescribes anti-epileptic drugs and who also orders neuropsychiatric testing on my patients, I can’t say I’d agree that anti-epileptics are a sledgehammer to cognition.
I have also never heard anything more than case reports of neurontin or depakote causing psychosis, and I prescribe them routinely. Not to say that psychosis and reduced cognitive function are directly related.
I have seen some adverse events with Keppra, but to attribute an eloquently written Supreme Court decision to a medication... I don’t think so. It’s just not going to happen.
‘Woke up with blood all over the pillow and my head stuck to the pillow.’
Ouch.
