The man responsible for getting Democrats elected to the U.S. Congress this fall has a message for his party's candidates: Stay away from the Democratic National Convention.
"If they want to win an election, they need to be in their districts," New York congressman Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told the Reuters Washington Summit on Tuesday.
The Democratic convention, to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, in early September to formally nominate President Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential nominee, is viewed warily by some of the party's candidates.
The September 3-6 gathering to fete a president whose popularity ratings have hovered around 50 percent is a particularly sensitive issue for Democratic candidates who are in close races in states or districts where Obama trails Republican Mitt Romney in voter surveys.
For such candidates, four days of mingling with Democratic leaders could turn off independent voters before the November 6 election.
"A trip to Charlotte may be interesting," Israel said, "but why leave your districts?"
Obama's poll ratings have little to do with his stance, Israel said.
"I don't care if the president was at 122 percent favorability right now," he said. "I think (candidates) should be in their districts."
McCASKILL STAYING AWAY
Israel's admonition comes as a growing list of Democrats say they will not be joining their fellow partisans in Charlotte. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill, one of the Democratic Party's most vulnerable candidates, will not attend, an aide said.

Look kid (I'm 73), I don't ever remember any party member being so negative and admiting it.
You would think the national media would pick up on that and blow it into a big story.
Just not news today when it comes to an A-Hole President. Everybody already knows it.
And if they’re not ceding the WH, it is because the new talking point (spin) is that Zero has the nomination so lock up that no embarrassment will befall the _resident should no one show up for the convention.
“What if they had a convention and nobody attended?”
MSM would add CGI conventioneers like the cast of Titanic, and fake much of the enthusiastic cheering from some studio in Burbank.
Like the firefighters booing Hillary, that wound up being wild cheers!
Thursday could be key.
There are rumours of up to 30 Democrat defections on the Contempt vote in the House.
Couple this with a bad result for Obama on Healthcare, and we should start to see stories appear in the MSM about Obama’ support slipping away, about how he cannot control his own party.
Democrats are beginning to fear the voters more than they fear Obama.
Thursday could be the tipping point.
I loved that pic.
All of those progressives wearing lighting magnets on their heads, during an electrical storm
Let’s hope that Fox New isn’t forbidden to attend. They will pan their cameras around and can figure out if it’s a rent-a-mob!
Don’t be surprised if the hall is at least half full of blacks that were bused in from all over the country. And I wouldn’t doubt if people are paid to attend either.
I laughed about that all day.
I think this is code for ‘no one wants to come and we have to make it look like it was our idea’....
As shocked as I am to hear Steve Israel tell Democrat Representatives to stay away from the Democrat Convention -- a huge chunk of these idiots are superdelegates! Who is gonna nominate Bobo then?
Ping
I’m just a baby compared to you two and I even find this shocking. I remember the days when the governor, senators, and congressmen would stand with their state’s delegates on nomination night while the vote counts were reported-—it was a big deal to be there and to be seen on tv.
This would be like Major League Baseball having the All-Star Game and then telling Albert Pujols or Derek Jeter to stay away and lay low for a couple days.
We have all these suspect polls out showing Obama supposedly starting to run away with the lead in swing states... when in reality it’s Democrats in tight races starting to run away from Obama.
