US will help Turkey hold Syria ‘accountable’ for jet shoot-down, says Obama spokesman

The White House on Monday promised to work with Turkey and other NATO allies to hold Syria "accountable" for what American officials have described as the deliberate downing of a Turkish military jet, apparently in international airspace.

Turkey said it would push NATO, whose governing body meets Tuesday to discuss the matter, to consider the June 22 incident an attack on the entire alliance. Under Article V of NATO's founding document, an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.

"We stand in solidarity with Turkey, a key U.S. ally," spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One. "We will work with Turkey, and other partners, to hold the Assad regime accountable."

Carney indicated that Washington preferred a diplomatic resolution to the flare-up in tensions. "We obviously support the Turks and we'll work with them," he said. "Turkey is a key ally of the United States, member of NATO."

Military action is unlikely. NATO operates by consensus, meaning its members must all agree on a course of action. While there have been media reports that Washington has been helping to coordinate weapons shipments from other countries to Syria's rebels, the U.S. has denied arming the uprising, and there is little appetite among Americans for another war in the Middle East.

Still, President Barack Obama has expressed mounting frustration with the weak international response to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's 15-month crackdown on opposition to his iron-fisted rule. Outside observers have put the death toll at around 14,000. Russia and China have blocked U.N. Security Council approval of tighter sanctions on Assad's regime. And the violence has eroded relations between Washington and Moscow.

Inevitable Iran-Turkey-Syria-Russia Alliance

http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.php?nn=8608140338

So if they are all allies...why would Syria be even shooting at Turkey?

Turkey and Russia develop strategic alliance http://www.todayszaman.com/news-269869-turkey-and-russia-develop-strategic-alliance.html The High Level Cooperation Council (ÜDİK) that was created during Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Ankara on May 12, 2010 has been transformed into a mechanism that serves as a joint cabinet. The third meeting of ÜDİK, whose second gathering was held during Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Moscow on March 16, 2011, will be hosted in Turkey in the second half of 2012. The sub-institutions and committees set up as part of ÜDİK seek to improve bilateral relations between the two countries and include the Joint Strategic Planning Group, where foreign ministers serve as chairs, the Social Forum, where civil society organizations are represented, and the Joint Economic Council, which hosts business world members and representatives, which continue to work on their specific agendas.

This story keeps on morphing. When it first happened it was reported that the Turkish jet was hit by anti-aircraft fire as it flew just 1km off the coast of Syrian town of Om al-Toyour which is about 15 miles south of the Turkish border. Now the Turks and NATO are spinning this and claiming that Syria used an anti-aircraft missile to hit a jet that was in international airspace and then there’s other comments from Turkey that claim the jet was in Syrian airspace ‘but only for five minutes’.

NATO wants a war with Syria and I believe they want it in time for the November elections to make Obama look good.

Ankara pleased with Morsi’s presidency in Egypt
http://www.todayszaman.com/news-284630-ankara-pleased-with-morsis-presidency-in-egypt.html

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry expressed its pleasure over the election of Mohammed Morsi as the new president of Egypt after the results of last weekend’s run-off vote.

Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood was elected the new president of Egypt after garnering 51.7 percent of the vote and defeating former general Ahmed Shafik, the state election committee said on Sunday.

“We congratulate Morsi on his election as the new president after the results of the polls which reflected the free will of the people. We hope the results of the elections, which are important to complete the transition process and the democratic transformation in Egypt, will be favorable to the people of Egypt and the whole region. Moreover, we congratulate the Egyptians for the big steps taken along the path to democracy, as well as the determination and maturity shown during this process.

War for the Turks? No, I don’t think so. This looks more like an effort to draw us further into a war with Russia over Syria.

The question is why did Turkish planes violate Syrian airspace ? If these planes were outside Syrian airspace, then NATO and Turkey would have a legal point. Right now they have no legal standing. Turkey was not attacked. Syria legally defended itself.

Obviously they want another cold war, but our moronic leadership may drive Israel into the Russian camp.

Looks like a Libya/Egypt redux. Destabilize the government so the moslem brotherhood can step in and seize power.

No...I’ll wager to disagree.

Turkey has always been an unreliable NATO ally.

I think Turkey was trying to be provacative. The question is what is the benefit of Russia and 0bama being at war?

The chess board is pretty crowded.

Is Turkey a pawn or a rook for Russia? Pawns are sacrificial.

Hussein Obama put Turkey up to this provocation to demonize the Syrian government in the UN, claiming that the jets were not in Syrian airspace.

Russia and China won't let this fly, they'll continue to hogtie the UN and force NATO to do nothing or act contrary to International Law. When they do , Russia will cut off NATO/US resupply to the Afghan Campaign, Redirect Iranian oil to China, and throttle Western Europe's natural gas.

Things will go bad real fast.

Could be as Turkey is supportive of the Morsi election. And as more of Russia’s allies turn islamic...the more prophecy is fulfilled...

“Turkey has always been an unreliable NATO ally.”

Didn’t JFK pull missiles out of Turkey as part of his dealing with the Cuban crisis?

The Turks have been having problems with Syria. So they would probably rather have NATO do their heavy lifting. Russia of course is playing everyone against everyone. Multi dimensional chess as usual. My guess is major war is inevitable and WMD will be on the table. They have cover now with the Fukushima crisis. No government is actively monitoring and reporting radiation levels because they are covering for Japan.

Yes that is the other shoe, but does it fit?

And it may indeed fit...Turkey jet downed in 'international airspace'

And yet the byline says, "Turkish media reports that plane wreckage was found in Syrian waters, as NATO schedules meeting to discuss incident."

BUT, as noted in this article from aljazeera, Turkey had close ties with Syria before the uprising.
