Turkey says Syrian forces have shot down one of its air force jets.
After a two-hour security meeting, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's office said the warplane that disappeared over the Mediterranean Sea Friday was shot down by Syria. The statement said the two pilots remain missing.
The prime minister's office said Turkey will decide on how to respond to the incident but did not elaborate.
Turkey has joined nations such as the U.S. in saying that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should step down because of the uprising in his country.
Meanwhile, U.N. Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan told reporters in Geneva Friday that countries of influence need to persuade both sides in Syria to stop the killing and start the talking. He said it is time for countries to raise the level of pressure on both Syria's government and the opposition to end violence in the country.
Mr. Annan said Iran should be part of the solution for bringing peace to Syria. Russia has pushed for Iran's involvement in resolving the conflict, while the U.S. has said Iran should not be involved.
The U.N. special envoy's comments came after Syrian activists said 26 men reported to be pro-government shabiha militia fighters were killed in an ambush in the northern Aleppo province.
Rami Abdelrahman, the head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told VOA on Friday that he received a video showing the bloodied bodies of the men piled on the side of a road.
Over 26 people following the Syrian regime were killed west of Aleppo this morning the people there said these people are from shabiha. We cannot confirm this, but we have received a video with over 26 bodies.
In an apparent reference to the same incident, Syrian state media reported Friday that at least 25 people were killed by armed terrorists in the same region outside Aleppo.
The Observatory said it could not confirm whether the victims were civilians, as Syrian state media reported, or shabiha militants, who have been blamed for a series of deadly attacks on civilians in recent months.
The group also reported fresh clashes Friday between government troops and rebels in the flashpoint city of Homs, where hundreds of civilians are believed to be trapped and unable to find shelter.
The International Committee of the Red Cross aborted its attempt to evacuate civilians from Homs Thursday after encountering close gunfire. The ICRC said it will attempt to go back to the area as soon as conditions permit.
The United Nations says up to 1.5 million Syrians are now in need of humanitarian assistance as it warns of a deteriorating situation in Syria. The figure reported by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is up from an earlier estimate of 1 million.
SOUNDBITE: Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (in Turkish)
Reuters: We have no word on the pilots, but Turkish helicopters as well as four assault boats are searching for the pilots along with Syrian ships. We will see the outcome of this joint search operation.''

APTN Regarding the loss of our plane, I cannot say it was downed, without definite information. It is not possible to say that. But soon, we will have a (security) meeting in Prime Minister's Office.

APTN The incident supposedly happened south of Hatay, 13 kilometres away from Latakia. Regarding our pilots, we do not have any information, but at the moment four of our gunboats and some Syrian gunboats are carrying out a joint search there (for the pilots). And we will see what kind of results this search will give us.
If the Turks retaliate the Syrians are toast, fighting is sport to the Turks.
Turkey is a member of NATO.
The NATO charter says and attack on one is an attack on all.
Obama will join Turkey in whacking Syria in October.
Wasn’t the plane in Syria’s airspace?
Nevermind, my bad.
One thing I did read over there...supposedly the FSA seized several anti-aircraft missiles from an air force base near Damascus. Many Syrian regulars defected as well. What if the FSA, currently involved in combat near Latakia (sight of shoot down) mistook the Turkish F-4 for a Syrian aircraft and brought it down?
Fingers pointing in all directions. Methinks the brothers Assad better have their personal jet fueled, with pilot on 5 minute stand-by...
ping
With the breakdown of talks between Pakistan and the US over military supplies to Afghanistan, Russia has near total control over what can be shipped to the US troops in Afghanistan. That fact will enter into the calculus of what to do in Syria.
I’m totally confused as well. I thought I read earlier it was in Syrian airspace.
The 5 minute standby is a good idea.
The whole M.E. is not looking good. (not that it ever does)
Its not nice to shoot down Turkeys airplanes. They take a dim view of such things.
“Methinks the brothers Assad better have their personal jet fueled, with pilot on 5 minute stand-by...”
My money’s on the Assad’s and here’s why.
Khofi Annan is the UN clown in charge of the mission. When he’s involved it never turns out well. He will fail miserably just like he did in Rwanda.
Egypt is getting ready to break out again. When it does, Syria becomes a sideshow.
And as a previous poster noted, the Russian’s are controlling our supply routes to Afghanistan. Will we jeopardize them in order to put an unknown entity in Syria into power?
But then again, who knows what the little prince in the White Hut will decree.
I don’t think Syria wants any part of Turkey.
I do not think Russia will give up its base at Tartus. Not easily. And yet they will not fight for another muslim country I don't think.
And yet, I've watched videos on al Gezeera showing what appear to be, G-3 (CETME) almost NIB being carried by FSA. Must be coming from Turkey? And we pretty much know Turkey is training and "re-grouping" former Assad military people.
All of Assad's equipment will do him little good if he doesn't have the man power to operate it. And he doesn't have Mali Mercs like Qadaffi did.
I just do not want to see any US/Allied troops fighting in another Third World lash-up.
“I just do not want to see any US/Allied troops fighting in another Third World lash-up.”
At least I know now that there is at least two of us who feel that way.
They will make short work of them if the Russkies don’t jump in. The Turks were the only people who could keep Arab Muslims in line..
Besides Keith Olbermann - is there anybody more irrelavant than Kofi Annan?
Re: At least I know now that there is at least two of us who feel that way.
Make that three of us who do not want US involvement. OIF vet
Another vote against US involvement.
Depending on how Turkey reacts this could give the Turkish F-16 pilots a chance to get some kills courtesy of the Syrian AF.
