Peter Orszag, former head of the Obama Office of Management and Budget, is desperate. With even Roll Call recognizing that President Obama is fighting an uphill battle for re-election, Orszag is floating a trial balloon: mandatory voting. His call for forced voting comes in an op/ed for Bloomberg News:
The U.S. prides itself as the beacon of democracy, but its very likely no U.S. president has ever been elected by a majority of American adults.
Its our own fault -- because voter participation rates are running below 60 percent, a candidate would have to win 85 percent or more of the vote to be elected by a majority.
Compulsory voting, as exists in Australia and more than two dozen other countries, would fix that problem. As William Galston of the Brookings Institution argues, Jury duty is mandatory; why not voting?
During the 2008 election cycle, voter participation was approximately 64 percent; in 2004, it was about the same. Orszag wants that number up. Why?
Beyond simply raising participation, compulsory voting could alter the role of money in elections. Turn-out-the-vote efforts, often bankrolled by big-money groups, would become largely irrelevant. Negative advertising could be less effective, because a central aim of such ads is to discourage participation in the opponents camp.

Good one! :)
Ads whole new meaning to the commie ‘RATS “Vote Or Die” mantra from a few years back. Ain’t police states a bitch?
Obamaland......
Indeed. Illinois governor Quinn was elected, carrying only two counties in the entire state. His opponent carried the other 103.
You have to register before they know you exist. Once registered you are required to keep your address updated.
On Election day you turn up at your local polling place and show ID, and the poll worker crosses your name out of a big book and gives you a ballot.
At the end of the day, anyone whose name has not been crossed out gets a $20 fine, unless they can give a reason they didn’t vote.
It leads to comedy pieces like this, from a program called The Chaser. (Language Warning.)

More not free on that list than free. I see Australia, Malta, Greece and Bahamas as the only ones whose election integrity is worth anything. The rest are fully corrupt.
The people in Iraq under Saddam were forced to vote. Old Saddam use to get 99% of the vote. That’s what dems want here. It’s totalitarian to FORCE people to vote. The left knows that - and they don’t care.
One way people vote is with their feet. They don’t bother to vote if parties bring forth endless losers. NOT voting is a way for citizens to let the big fat ego types know they have to do better. It’s a friggin message. Read it liberals.
The reason dems want names o n voter roles is they vote people who don’t show up. (voting the dead is an accidental by product of voting the people who don’t show ) If it’s against the law to stay home on election day, the person staying home is NOT going to object to some democrat ‘voting for them’.
Democrats cheat - that’s what this is about. Democrats are also control freaks. That’s what this is about too...
Sad the ‘doting court eunuchs’ of the MSM fail to notice...
Either your signature or your brains will be on that Ballot.
I guess they’re disappointed that there was no bump for them after Obama made Amnesty the law of the land.
Does this remind you of that cartoon clip of Bullwinkle the Moose pulling one thing after another out of a magician's top hat?
Why, it is clearly there if you're one of the enlightened ones, basically a RAT bastard socialist liberal demoRAT. /s
Right alongside of the penumbras & emanations (wisps & vapors) of the Consitution that Harry Blackmun found to legalize abortion in Roe vs Wade, as a guaranteed constitutional RIGHT for a woman to kill her baby while in the womb (but sometimes outside the womb as well, if the baby somehow survived the abortion).
I have the right to buy cigarettes and alcohol, and the government gains tax revenues when I do, but can they FORCE me to buy those things? I have the right to own and operate a car. The government gains tax revenues if I want to drive that car - sales taxes, licenses, registration fees, insurance, fuel, etc., but should they be allowed to FORCE me to drive or own a car? I could go on...but just like the health insurance mandate before the USSC right now, there MUST be limits on the powers of government. ESPECIALLY this current administration!
Whatever they can do to advance their socialist agenda until January 21, 2013, when the new administration is sworn in, they will do and, once they do it, it may be almost impossible to back it out. Obama is in "death by a thousand cuts" mode right now because he knows his days are shortened and the end is near for him. If he is NOT stopped at every one of these points, we will need decades, if ever, to undo his damage.
And "slim" is leaving town January, 2013!
Most people who don’t vote don’t have a clue about whats going on in the country and what the various people to stand for.
Frankly its a good thing they dont vote as if they did they be voting blind. Odds are their vote would go to who evers name sounded most famalure.
Looks like Orzag’s head is still stuck up Obama’s butt. Better get a winch and a tow truck to get it out before he suffers more brain damage.
I’d **hate** to see a rumor go around that police, sheriffs and other law enforcement will be near polling places to locate those voters with outstanding warrants, fake IDs, child support orders, welfare fraud, illegal aliens, wage garnishments, bounties and such like. That’d be a hateful rumor to start and I hope nobody gets it going, since that’d surpress the vote, especially amongst certain ethnic groups....
Comrade, Stop by your local voting station and sign in. For your convenience, we have filled out your ballot. Thank you for your cooperation.....

And this nutjob was head of the OMB? Sheesh, we're in trouble.
