BRUNSWICK, Ohio (AP) Mitt Romney is refusing to say that he would overturn President Barack Obama's new policy allowing some young illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.
The Republican presidential candidate tells CBS Face the Nation that if hes president, Obamas executive order would be overtaken by events by virtue of my putting in place a long-term solution.
Romney was asked three times in the interview if he would overturn Obamas order, but he didnt directly answer the question. Instead, he said would work to pass a law to help those young people who were brought in by their parents through no fault of their own. Romney said he doesnt know why Obama feels stop-gap measures are the right way to go.
The candidates comments represent a further softening of his rhetoric on immigration since the GOP primary campaign ended.

Ill be frank with you, politically it may not help him to be openly apposed, just as it certantly does not help him among his base to be in support.
I suspect He would be better off attacking Obama on the constitutional issue openly. But really at this stage of the game he needs to follow the polls on the issue.
Being openly apposed to the issue and then losing the election becase of that oppsition and the countless illegal but nonetheless effective votes against him. Will Not resolve the issue of illegal immgration but instead make it much worse.
On the other hand faneing support or neutrality to get elected and then killing the lawless acts once elected will do much to resolve the issue.
So your going to have to ask yourself, do you want this problem soved or do you want the truth now?
If we want to beat the socialist left in their own riged game we are going to have to play the field they have left us.
Lies. It was the last segment of Bush's tenure that saw the deficit growing so large and that was after Pelosi became speaker.
And if you think the GOP could have passed effective housing reform without Democratic cooperation you're extremely politically naive. That would have been seen as Obamacare is now...rammed through without a single Dem vote and almost every "fascist GOP" would have been voted out toute suite. Then we really would have had a depression.
“So standing up for principles against a unconstitutional grab is muddling side issues, distractions and a trap set by Obama?”
If you want to win the war for the Constitution your going to have to pick only the battles you can win and avoid the battles you can’t.
Mitt needs to follow the polls here and not lose the election on the account of millions of illegal yet effective votes going against him.
Obama’s lawless order impacts the economy...but nobody is talking about that aspect.
Six years of bush and GOP Congress got us huge deficits and disastrous housing bubble
Lies
Nope, truth. Check your facts before posting. Deficits were higher than ever in history by 2005. And Bush proposed his own plan for no-down-payment loans; he said that traditional lending factors weren’t preventing people from getting homes. (Well duh, that’s the point — people who can’t afford homes shouldn’t be getting them). You can wish away the facts, but that doesn’t make them disappear.
As a spineless politician you have to go with the flow — damn the Constitution.
Romney doesn’t know where the flow is taking him yet and that’s why he is reserving an answer for a later occasion.
When Romney focuses on the economy he IS standing on principles...extremely strong ones.
He’s not protecting us from the millions of illegals who’ll be competing for american jobs, thanks to Obama’s EO. That’s an economic issue, and Romney is AWOL.
Bush said a few things like you suggest and then he ALSO proposed reform many times when it was clear that the housing bubble was growing.
Democrats are far and away the major culprits in this whole area and for the economy in general. Focus your blame where it's due.
Dems always scream "race" if you don't know your history. Why devolve into that kind of debate. Center on the economy without a race issue and Romney moves further ahead.
“The Congress is going to tie this mess up in the courts.”
U-huh. No doubt BHO2 is terrified. /sarc
The power to stop this administration belongs to Congress, not the Supreme Court. The problem is they’re hesitent to use that Constitutionally endowed power.
Cngress has the power to stop his orders. And they have the power to impeach.
What Congress doesn’t seem to have is the will. They’re too scared of the potential for rioting organized by communists. They are afraid it will cause a public backlash.
What they ought to be afraid of is us. We the people are more powerful than any piddling group the communists can gin up.
It is far past time for the Congress to feel the majorities anger.
Art of War 101. It's amazing how many people don't understand this.
Farmers know what the solution involves - it is mechanization. They just don’t want to go there because of the initial expense.
It is cheaper to hire illegal aliens for seasonal work and then let the taxpayer support that population the rest of the year.
Pass laws that put farmers in prison for violating our immigration laws, and they will change damn fast!
And here I thought only left dim bulbs believed in Hope & Change.
If Willard becomes president, a Republican dominated congress will roll over and beg him to scratch their bellies.
The deficit in 2005-06 was 574 billion. The highest in history.
Bush and Rove also kept the housing bubble growing, with their plan for “Increasing Minority Homeownership” by promoting no-do-payment loans.
In his speech at the White House Conference on Increasing Minority Homeownership, Bush said:
“The goal is, everybody who wants to own a home has got a shot at doing so. The problem is we have what we call a homeownership gap in America. ...
“And so what are the barriers that we can deal with here in Washington?”
“Well, probably the single barrier to first-time homeownership is high down payments. “
Oh, but he has commented on it, and said precisely the wrong thing. He totally agrees with what Obama's doing - just not the way he's going about it.
Willard should have just been honest and run in the Democrat party. He agrees with them on every single issue of importance. His record as Governor of Massachusetts documents that fact beyond any question.
How far will an impeachment go through the Rat controlled Senate and how much will an impeachment attempt fire up his disillusioned and increasingly disinterested base?
Yeah, we’d probably be smart to follow Mitt’s example just give up on all that patriotic, constitutional, pro-America stuff. Much easier to stop fighting with the left, and figure out how to beat them at their own agenda.
What a winning strategy!
Hey Mitt you send back the whole family!!! It will take time as did the tens of millions that came here. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION the final nail in America’s coffin!!!!
Welcome to the Sun Tzu Patriot Honor Brigade of Free Republic. It's simply astonishing how many Freepers don't understand the fundamental dynamics at work in this election.
Upon election, Mitt Romney is going to continue forwarding the Obama left's agenda - just like he did while he was Governor of Massachusetts. Freepers who think otherwise, are simply buying tickets to Hope & Change II: The sequel.
