And thanks very much for the Happy Father's Day thread! Hands-on Fathers are a vital part of the nuclear family - the single most important institution in our society - the bulwark of our social order.

Thanks very much, Kathy! I hope you'll indulge me if I take this opportunity to honor my own Father. I had intended to start a thread in his honor, but with extended hours at work I just don't have the time.
I believe you've seen this picture before:
This picture, of my father and me, was taken 25Aug1969, the day he retired from the Navy after twenty-four years of service. He enlisted shortly before his 18th birthday in 1945. He served in the American Theatre during WWII.
After attending college under the GI bill, he was called up from the reserves in 1950 to serve in Korea. A radioman, he served on a destroyer, the USS Borie, DD-704, which was detailed to the combat zone, offshore of Korea. The Borie took part in the Hungnam Evacuation in December, 1950. This evacuation occurred after the massive intervention of Chicoms and the fabled withdrawal of the 1st Marine Division from the Chosin Reservoir.
He took an examination and was commissioned an Ensign in the Medical Service Corps 29Jun1951. He served as an officer until his retirement in 1969. I could write many a page about his service during those years, but I'll save them for another time, except to note that he had boots on the ground in Vietnam on several occasions 1963-1965 as a member of a renowned medical research team based in Taiwan.
In April, 1969, he kissed me and sent me off to war from Dulles Airport. When I came home four short months later, he pinned on my Purple Heart as his last official act as a Naval Officer. I am proud to be a Vietnam Veteran as my father was before me. I'm proud of my father, a three-war veteran of the U.S. Navy. I am forever in his debt for the things he taught me, the example he provided me, and the unconditional love he gave me. That's all I can say for now - monitor's getting blurry.
