There is a certain tiresome message weve all heard: the notion that the Republican and Democratic parties are the same. Its often put forth by people who consider themselves outside-the-box thinkers, and they fancy their point of view the enlightened one. Sometimes cynical George Carlin types, their message is, Hey, Im smart enough to know both parties are playin the game. Dont try to fool me!
This attitude was apparent in a few of the comments under a recent piece I wrote about liberal immorality. One respondent opined, for instance, What still amazes [me] is that there has been definite documentation about the lack of morals that all politicians have. Neither side can claim to be exempt from this. Yet, there seems to be this arrogance among the right, that they can explain away any misgivings that a Republican does.
Now, the first thing to mention here is that my articles focus was on ideology liberalism and conservatism far more than party. However, since these ideologies are associated with, respectively, the Democrats and Republicans, whatever differences the ideologies breed will also manifest themselves in the parties to a great extent. More significantly, though, my piece was not mainly about politicians but liberals in general. This is significant because you can find a given fault in any group, but this doesnt mean that it characterizes the group. So, sure, there are bad politicians everywhere, one in every bunch. But how do the rank-and-file react? Do they demand a degree of virtue from their leaders or only a degree of success? Lets examine it.

Both parties may not be the same, but there are too many in the GOP who by all rights ought to be in the treasoncrat party.
Examples:
juan mclame
lindsey grahamesty
olympia snowe
susan collins
Etc
Etc
Etc
Then there is the GOP “leadership” who are closet communists who keep pushing these limp wristed panty wetting RINO’s.
We tell them that we want a Reagan style conservative, they tell us the era of Reagan is dead and give us juan mclame.
We tell them to support those who are supported by the Tea Party, they tell us that we have to support wishy washy RINO’s because conservatives can’t get elected.
Round and round it goes every election cycle.
Very good analogy; nicely done.
No. You judge a party by it’s fruits. What we’ve gotten from Republicans is an ever growing Federal Government and shrinking liberty.
“No. You judge a party by its fruits. What weve gotten from Republicans is an ever growing Federal Government and shrinking liberty.”
That is leadership, not the party, the base and the platform are the party.
In the rank and file. In the leadership, not so much.
>> What weve gotten from Republicans is <<
John Roberts, Sam Alito, Nino Scalia and Clarence Thomas.
‘Nuff said!
Yes, and would these folks rather have four more Ginsburgs, Sotomayors or Kagans?
Yes, there are similarities. Still, though, there’s no comparison between the two parties.
There is a difference. Under Republicans, Wall Street does good and Main Street doesn’t. Under Democrats, Wall Street does good and Main Street doesn’t. See?
Of course, they’re different.
Democrats are evil.
Republicans are stupid and spineless.
Both seem to be intent on spending us into penury.
Neither is upholding the Constitution. Neither is working for the betterment of the United States. Neither is looking out for American citizens. Neither can pass up an opportunity to line their pockets no matter who it hurts. Nope, sorry, don’t see a difference between the two.
The platform - don’t make me puke. I’d be surprised if 1 in 10 republican office holders have even read the platform let alone feel bound by it.
And Souter and Kennedy (half the time).
Not NEARLY ‘Nuff said!!
They’re not the same, but...the party establishment of each has no fundamental values except perpetuation and aggrandizement of its national party. It is only the ‘fringe’ members of either party that speak out and stand up for fundamental principles of their party.
“The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work, and then they get elected and prove it.”-
P. J. O’Rourke
I do not think "Democrat Values" are the same.
To name a few existing differences.
Your argument is completely moot. Thanks to Roberts, the latest in the long line of failed Republican court appointees, the work of the court is now complete. There is no Constitutional limit to Congress doing anything it pleases. So it is completely irrelevant who the next nominee is.
There are other reasons to elect Romney but picking the next SCCOTUS justice isn’t one of them. It just doesn’t matter.
