With the U.S. moving the majority of its naval fleet to the Pacific, commanders are eagerly looking for invitations to park the planes and ships that will be pouring into the region.
Travis Tritten at Stars and Stripes reports that the Pentagon has apparently been fanning the old flame of friendship with the Philippines and will be re-opening two bases it left in 1991 — Subic Bay and Clark Air Base.
The U.S. had a falling out with the island nation in the early nineties and pulled out of the bases, which were then built-up by a series of private developers and builders. How useful what's left is a matter of debate, but the locations used to be major centers of operation for American forces in the Pacific.

I think we need to do both Camrahn Bay in Vietnam may be better suited for a Naval base and Nave Air Wing. They have a land based supply line. We need to greatly increased port calls in both Subic and Camrahn before we do anything else and see how that works out.

I was TDY to Clark AFB twice in the early 1970’s. Loved San Miguel beer, however you never wanted to hold your beer up to a light......there were ‘things’ floating around in the bottle that I couldn’t identify. The joke was that you had to drink your beer quickly before whatever was in the bottle drank it first.

If I recall, Pinatubo volcano that had a lot with us pulling out. Something like three to four feet of ash at CLARK AFB in the early 90s.
Saigon used to be a choice for retirees in the EARLY 1960s.
