With the U.S. moving the majority of its naval fleet to the Pacific, commanders are eagerly looking for invitations to park the planes and ships that will be pouring into the region.
Travis Tritten at Stars and Stripes reports that the Pentagon has apparently been fanning the old flame of friendship with the Philippines and will be re-opening two bases it left in 1991 Subic Bay and Clark Air Base.
The U.S. had a falling out with the island nation in the early nineties and pulled out of the bases, which were then built-up by a series of private developers and builders. How useful what's left is a matter of debate, but the locations used to be major centers of operation for American forces in the Pacific.

I am guessing they do not want to speak chineese........OIL is in the basin there and the Chicoms want it......imagine that.
Just another LIE by the minor Zero. Remember his promise to cut the military and remove them from foreign bases, now he wants to reopen more of them. What a loser and moron.
Ping!
Fond memories of my many USAF TDY's at Clark in the 60's.
The only place better in the Far East/South East Asia, was Bangkok
Had the nicest/best NCO Clubs (Coca Cabana)in the World.
Of course how could I forget the lovely "ladies" in Angeles City?
And I still consider San Miguel one of the best beers I ever drank.
Get your t-shirts ready: All your base are belong to us!
Just Damn!
I lived on West Tapinac!
What a place.
been there, done that, no reminders, thankfully!
We Shall Return
I think we need to do both Camrahn Bay in Vietnam may be better suited for a Naval base and Nave Air Wing. They have a land based supply line. We need to greatly increased port calls in both Subic and Camrahn before we do anything else and see how that works out.
Cam Ranh!
“
Subic bay ... Olongapo city ... sh$t river ... clap city ... San Miguel beer ... fond memories.”
I was TDY to Clark AFB twice in the early 1970’s. Loved San Miguel beer, however you never wanted to hold your beer up to a light......there were ‘things’ floating around in the bottle that I couldn’t identify. The joke was that you had to drink your beer quickly before whatever was in the bottle drank it first.
EODGUY
In other words until I see another source it's BS...
That’s what I understood as well.
Here’s an interesting documentary about that called *In the Path of a Killer Volcano*
Here’s a clip from that video. Interestingly, this clip from the video deals particularly with the the evacuation of the base and the eruption of the volcano and its impact on the base.

That’s what I thought. That happened right after I left Guam in 1989.
This nonsense is just bread & circuses for us little people. Who is the threat to the Philippines? Our preferred trading partner, Red China?
If I recall, Pinatubo volcano that had a lot with us pulling out. Something like three to four feet of ash at CLARK AFB in the early 90s.
Saigon used to be a choice for retirees in the EARLY 1960s.
Happy Days are here again in the Philippines: Prostitutes will be celebrating along with girls looking for a free pass to America by finding and marrying an airman or sailor.
Indeed.
I see there was an . . . unaware question downthread.
Sigh. Willfull blindness is such a plague on the Republic.
