The Republican-controlled House of Representatives, which took office in January 2011, has enacted federal spending bills under which the national debt has increased more in less than one term of Congress than in the first 97 Congresses combined.
In the fifteen months that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives--led by Speaker John Boehner--has effectively enjoyed a constitutional veto over federal spending, the federal governments debt has increased by about $1.59 trillion.
Article 1, Section 9, Clause 7 of the Constitution says: No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law. A law appropriating money cannot be enacted unless it is approved by the House.
The approximately $1.59 trillion in new debt accumulated since the Republican-controlled House gained a veto over federal spending legislation is more than the total increase in the federal debt between 1789, when the first Congress convened, and October 1984, when the 98th Congress was nearing the end of its second session.
Rep. Frederick Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania served as speaker in the first Congress. Rep. Tip ONeill of Massachusetts served his third term as speaker in the 98th Congress.
When Boehner became speaker on Jan. 5, 2011, the federal government was operating under a continuing resolution that had been passed on Dec. 21, 2010 by a lame-duck Congress. That CR expired on March 4, 2011.
On March 1, 2011, Boehner agreed to a new short-term spending deal with President Barack Obama and Democratic congressional leaders to keep the government running past the March 4, 2011 expiration of the old CR. Since March 4, 2011, federal expenditures have been carried out under a series of CRs approved by both the Republican-controlled House and the Democrat-controlled Senate and signed into law by President Obama.
At the close of business on March 4, 2011, the total federal debt was $14,182,627,184,881.03, according to the Treasury Department's Bureau of the Public Debt. At the close of business on May 31, 2012, it was 15,770,685,085,364.14. That is an increase of $1,588,057,900,483.11in just 15 months.
All of the debt accumulated by the federal government throughout the history of the country did not exceed $1.588 trillion until October 1984.
Under the Republican-controlled House, the federal debt has been increasing at an average pace of about $105.9 billion per month.
Frederick Muhlenberg served two non-consecutive terms as speaker--in the first and third Congresses. At the end of the first Congress, in 1791, the total debt of the federal government was about $75.5 million, according to the U.S. Treasury.
Tip ONeill served as speaker in the 95th through 99th Congresses, from 1977 through 1986.
At the end of September 1984, during the 98th Congress, the total national debt was approximately $1,572,266,000,000.00, according to the Treasury Departments Monthly Statement of the Public Debt for that month. At the end of October 1984, it was $1,611,537,000,000.00, according to the Monthly Statement of the Public Debt.
Anyone who votes for the GOP establishment needs to be hung along side obozo for theft from the American people.
Tea partiers need to kneecap the National Republican Committee. Just last week the two RINOs representing Michigan lost their seats to a coalition of tea partiers, GOP conservatives, and Libertarians.
DEPOPULATE criminals/socialists/totalitarians/RINOS (Republicans Implementing Nunaces Of Socialism) from the body politic.
DEFUND their collectives, foreign and domestic.
Above all, if you wish to be strong, begin by rooting out every particle of socialism that may have crept into your legislation. This will be no light task. - Frederic Bastiat 1801-1850

0failure took office... our debt was $10 trillion
it’s now $15.6 trillion and expected to hit $16 trillion before november
GWBush took office and the debt was $6 trillion...
therefore, he jacked up the debt by $4 trillion in 8 years
it also means that 0failure has overseen, in just THREE(3) years, a debt increase equal to the entire debt produced in the first 230 years of the country
No veto needed, just do the Nancy Reagan approach “Just say NO” to the continuing resolution and make the Senate pass a budget.
The same idiots who bought into the propaganda piece on how Obama actually slowed the growth of spending, will buy into this piece of trash. By posting without examining, we help the MSM build the case that Dims are more fiscally conservative. This piece is a natural follow-up to the one about Obama’s slow spending growth - all pre-election propaganda and they need to formulate the lies early enough to make them “common knowledge” by Nov.
Not so fast to put this on the backs of the GOP
Remember the “debt crisis” of 2011?
Remember all the GOP finagling with Harry Reid and obama to tie the debt increase to spending cuts? Remember the threat of our debt being downgraded without a deal?
Remember obama and democrat threats (not bluffs) to shut down the US government starting with social security, MEDICARE, and military pay - if the first black president didn’t get his allowance increased by a properly civil GOP?
So now it is “the GOP House” that ran up the debt in the past 15 months?
I don’t think so
Remember this?

Has any house-approved budget been enacted since the GOP took over?
ask Harry Reid - it is up to him to allow the House budget to come up for vote by the Senate before going to the potus for signature

Ahem.
This is the GOP Congress that we keep getting assurances will “keep Romney in check” and “hold his feet to the fire”? They won’t even slow down the spending when they have a hostile President from the other Party to contend with. What makes people think they’re going to embarrass a President from their own Party by suddenly putting a halt to spending?
This could be fun!
Socialists=Losers (looters and moochers)
Capitalists=Winners (producers)
So when the dems controlled Congress and Bush was president, spending was his fault. But when the reps have the house under Obama and spending is out of control it’s the reps fault. Got it.
The Republican’s only option has been to shut down the government.
That is nothing more than political suicide, and the leadership knows it.
They have done what they could to slow the Dems march to socialism...they cannot stop it. That is why Obama, and his Dem minions, have to be voted out this year!
The massive increases in spending and the deficit remain the fault of Pelosi, Obama, and Reid. They increased the baseline in 2008, and though the Republicans have stopped anything on the scale of another Porkulus, they are nearly powerless to roll back the day to day spending.
They have tried and been blocked by the Senate in every instance!
Hah, funny how some on FR buy into that. I liked the post “Our only hope is the Democrats”...
Can you just imagine what the debt would if the Republicans hadn’t been there to slow the Democrats down.
Admittedly Boehner has done a piss-poor job, but he has slowed them down.No telling what the debt would be had the Democrats still had the the floor
LOL! Good one. Could be fun BUMP!
