When presidents were military men
Article by: John Nagl , Special to the Washington Post | Updated: May 25, 2012 - 11:52 AMIn every presidential election since 1992, the candidate with the less distinguished military resume has triumphed.
Bill Clinton defeated war heroes George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole; National Guard pilot George W. Bush beat Vietnam veterans Al Gore and John Kerry; and Barack Obama was decisively elected over John McCain, who had displayed extraordinary valor during years of captivity as a Navy pilot in North Vietnam.
In 2012, we won't have the chance to test this trend: For the first time in modern American history, neither major candidate for the presidency has any military experience.
This is a dramatic change. The crucible of combat not only created these United States but has also given us many of our most successful presidents.

Wars have given the United States many of its most important political leaders, and we can expect those who have led this country's sons and daughters in the sands of Anbar province and the mountains of the Hindu Kush to turn their sights to the highest office in the land in years to come.

Hell anymore it does, "Constitution", whats that!?
My Mother's family hails from minor English nobility based out of Cumbria in North-West England, and you can't get much more Loyalist than that! (though I don't know my ancestors positions during the Revolutionary War) Did your family leave voluntarily or were they forced out after the war.
Were you raised in New Zealand or the U.K.? I here its beautiful down in New Zealand, I have always wanted to visit.
You might have come across a significant point about how Mitt would govern, though. If the LDS has extracted a pledge from Mitt that he won’t do squat in the White House without continuing to ask its permission — well, this ought to be made very plain. Though to be fair, we all know by now from Obama’s behavior that he is a puppet, and we’d like to know who HIS puppeteers are. At least we know that if Mitt would have them, they have an address in Salt Lake City.
I doubt that JFK asked a Priest for permission to run for president.
The Mormon Prophet is of course over all men, including the Catholic Pope.
He is a mortal man until after death, then like Mitt Romney, he will become a God, he is also the “prophet, seer, and revelatorthe only person on the earth who receives revelation.”
You don’t understand that if Mitt steps out of line in any manner, if he comes out of the cult’s control in any degree, then he loses his place in the religion, and in the after life, he will not become a God for instance and can not even enter those palace like temples, the slightest failing puts him back with the 85% of Mormons who are forbidden to enter those temples and must attend the regular, plain, church buildings, and who are not privy to the inner secret world of the devout Mormons.
You gotta wonder why the “85%” even bothers, if being a non-god (and going to a Mormon hell) is their fate.
I’d think any priest that JFK saw would say he was glad to hear of JFK’s desire to be president, and that the priest would be glad to offer whatever guidance he could. It wouldn’t be a formal “permission” arrangement. Though I think there ought to be one based on such so called Catholics as Nancy Pelosi.
I don’t know how anything about JFK or Catholics, or Priests relates to Mitt Romney.
He ran like a wush, not a a Soldier. He didn’t want to win bad enough. And why a man with his money can’t purchase a decent set of teeth, is beyond me. Looks count today, unlike in the days gone by when TV was not the big thing in your living room and all you had was a radio.
This is another HOLD YOUR NOSE and vote election. 2 Evils is still an evil. Better hope we take the Senate and the House with veto proof majorities with CONSERVATIVES. Because there is about spits worth of difference in RINO and 0!
Seven of the eleven shown served during WWII. Carter served immediately following the war. Kennedy was the first Navy veteran to be President. His four immediate successors and G. H. W. Bush were also Navy veterans - making a total of six. Eisenhower was Army, Reagan was Army Air Force and G. W. Bush was Air Force - the successor to the Army Air Force.
Prior to them, Truman was in the Army during WWI and although FDR was not an actual veteran, he did serve as Asst. Secretary of the Navy during WWI.
That is EXACTLY what happened, and why we are where we are. It wasn't the GOP-e that did this. We split the vote badly this time, and Romney was there to catch the pieces. Maybe some of these posts of yours will give someone a clue.
Reagan was Army, he started in 1937 in the Army reserves with the cavalry went on active duty as Army, and in mid 1942 went to the aviation branch of the Army.
Reagan was always Army until his discharge.
There is no reason to mention the Air Force in regards to Ronald Reagan, just saying Army is sufficient, he was always in the United States Army, and spent most of his army time not attached to the Air division which he switched to when he was ending his more traditional Army activities and started making movies.
I think that people need to know that Reagan was long term Army, and that he served for more than 8 years, and had almost two years of Army correspondence courses starting in 1935, and enlisted in the reserves in 1937, probably a combat unit (cavalry) when the military was seen as a dumping ground for losers, and was out of favor, and of low prestige, not just the three movie making years after accepting attachment to Army aviation.
