Mary Richardson Kennedy funeral: Divided families bid RFK Jr.’s wife fairwell

Two divided families united in mourning Saturday for an emotional farewell to Mary Richardson Kennedy just three days after her shocking suicide.

Dozens of family members and celebrity friends — including Caroline Kennedy, John McEnroe, Edward James Olmos, Glen Close and Chevy Chase — filled St. Patrick’s Church in Mount Kisco for the funeral.

A police escort brought a gray hearse carrying her body to the house of worship, with her estranged husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and their four children trailing in a black Town Car.

Matriarch Ethel Kennedy, a veteran of such grim family gatherings, rode behind them inside a black SUV. A dozen pallbearers brought the wooden casket inside.

It was the same church where the couple’s children — Conor, Kyra, William and Aiden, ranging in age from 11 to 17 — received their First Communion.

The three oldest kids, along with one of Mary’s sisters, helped steer the casket on its final journey.

The church was absolutely still as the children accompanied their mother body inside the intimate stone church, where huge vases of white roses and delphiniums flanked the altar.

“She was an angel,” said high school friend Virginia Warner. “It was a fitting tribute.”

Comedian Larry David, scheduled to speak at the service, was too distraught to address the mourners. Daughter Kyra read a psalm in one of the funeral’s most touching moments.

At another point, many in the crowd wept when the song “Amazing Grace” reached the lines, “Through many dangers, toils and snares/We have already come.”

The mourners filled the 300 seats in the pews and spread along the side aisles and the lobby.

Kerry Kennedy, the dead woman’s sister-in-law and friend since boarding school, provided a touch of levity with tales from Mary’s political past.

In one, while working for Andy Warhol, she convinced the pop artist to donate a painting as a fund-raiser for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

I remember that ad from the Lampoon. When I was in Recruiting, we came up for an ad for armor enlistments. Involved driving an M 60 over VW. Some Gen. in the Pentagon made the ad agency change it to a wall.

Poor VW, the Dangerfield of autos!

But then imagine having to live up to the image. I can’t imagine a less forgiving world to be in.

the kennedys callously abuse women; if Ted was there they’d have to keep him from running around in his boxer shorts.

The church had a funeral mass in 1960 for my cousin who committed suicide.

RFK, Jr. always did seem like a phony -- the guy whose grandfather bought the presidency for his own son going around talking in his funny voice about how "our democracy" was being threatened by corporations (like the ones his family had invested in).

But it wasn't quite clear how much of a phony he was. Right now he's out there with John Edwards as a major league hypocrite and poseur.

Could some Catholic Freepers enlighten me?

Sure. It used to be common practice to deny a church funeral to a suicide. However, someone's subjective culpability for a sin depends on their mental freedom and ability to understand the sinfulness of their act. The theory today is that most suicides are sufficiently depressed or otherwise mentally disturbed that they cannot, with certainty, be held completely subjectively culpable for their sin. So its very rare today for a suicide to be denied a church funeral.

And, pace crosshairs, the fact that a Kennedy was involved has nothing to do with it.

I've never understood why the Kennedy family is considered by some to be American royalty. What did they ever do to deserve such accolades?

Because the Kennedy family made the ultimate sacrifice by having two brothers assassinated and the media had the template to drive the liberal agenda...

Kennedy Camelot was a great media marketing ploy...

“I am curious as to why the Catholic Church was willing to give her a church funeral, given that she was a suicide.”

...I wonder why the Catholic Church is willing to allow any of these abortion supporting, pathetic excuses for human beings into the church in the 1st place.

As far as I’m concerned it all goes back to the patriarch,Old Joe Kennedy.

He wanted power for his sons and pushed, fought, and paid for it.

They became arrogant and entitled and I truly pity any woman who married a Kennedy man.

Jr. didn’t give two-$hits about her while she was alive. Now that she’s dead, he’s going to capitalize on the political opportunity to make himself look like a caring husband. Just another slime ball Kennedy.

Kennedy was the first president ever totally created by the media. FDR USED the media, Kennedy was its creature.

"I’ve never understood why the Kennedy family is considered by some to be American royalty. What did they ever do to deserve such accolades?"

Not that they've been reported doing things like talking to trees like King George III (they may have, but the MSM hasn't reported it. They only report Kennedy scandals when there's an arrest or death.), but there seems to be a solid streak of insanity in the clan.

Can you think of any of those Kennedys that you'd want to have as your next door neighbor? I sure can't.
