The pile-on was in full effect within hours of Gov. Jerry Brown's announcement this week that California's budget deficit had grown to $15.7 billion, with The Week giving its national audience a summary of the Golden State's financial affairs.
"California's financial apocalypse," the magazine offered. "A concise guide."
Fox News played the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Californication," and host Greg Gutfeld proclaimed Brown captain of "the Titanic that is California, a state so broke it may ask Greece for a loan."
On Friday, the Democratic governor slapped back on national TV.
"This is not Europe," Brown told Charlie Rose on "CBS This Morning." "This is still the Wild West, and we're going to prove to the rest of this country and the world that we know how to do it."
For Brown and California it may be a tough sell.

Jerry “moonbeam” Brown set Cal up for failure in the mid to late 1970’s.
Mexifornia is doomed..only small % of tax payers are paying for all the freeloaders. CA can’t, won’t survive.
& all I hear out here on the radio are commercials for the CalFresh (welfare) program. WTF!!
Even more unbelievable, I heard that these CalFresh commercials are also playing on spanish radio in Tijuana. You can’t make this stuff up!
Well, I for one ain't buying!
Ah, socialism.
Honey-flavored on the outside, something else on the inside.
Mexifornia is “WAITING” for Dohbamas second term... i.e. bail out..
NO... America has NOT learned its lesson YET!...
Dohbama is punishment for murdering our babies..
Its NOT over YET... America needs a second “DOSE”...
You know...... before the pukeing starts..
Did they tax WEED over there yet , they said it would make them rich
Linger?? Hardly the word that describes it.
They’re getting worse by the minute!
One day Moonbeam will honestly be able to say “California...where only the stoners are taxed.” All the respectable businesses will be gone by then and it will become a narco addicts dream land.
“Mexifornia is doomed..only small % of tax payers are paying for all the freeloaders. CA cant, wont survive.”
Exactly. The people carrying the load are leaving the state.
California has been my home my entire life. I just got back from Arkansas and was kind of/sort of house shopping. We have one older relative left and when he goes we are gone.
Old Jer helping to teach elementary school students arithmetic......
“OK boys and girls....let’s do our numbers......say them with me.....one, two, three, nine, seventeen.......”
Damn, almost fell off my chair laughing at that pablum
Brown must be eating some wild mushrooms...
“This is still the Wild West, and we’re going to prove to the rest of this country and the world that we know how to do it.”
I have a picture in my mind of a San Fran Gay parade with guys in chaps and motorcycle caps.
prove that they know how to do what?
destroy a state so thoroughly?
California can’t afford it, but we need to recall Jerry Brown the way we did Gray Davis, but replace him with someone more on the lines of Tom McClintock.
We need to launch a campaign “The only good Democrat is One out of office, bound and gagged.”
We have to get the Left out of play, and into the closet where they belong. Out of sight, and out of mind. They screw up everything.
One way out Drill Jerry Drill
NOT an out for ol’ Jerry as the Democrats are in control of California, and they would just increase spending to exceed even that revenue.
We need to be rid of the Democrats period. They haven’t a clue about economics. Spend, spend, spend is all the Liberals know. It feels good so they do it.
Oh for the love of Pete. Jerry Brown's BS is as close as he ever got to the "Wild West."
It’s becoming a near demographic impossibility for a conservative to win a statewide race in California. Even ‘moderate’ Republicans can’t win; the one exception being a movie star. There simply aren’t enough conservative whites left in California.
It may well turn out that the only way a Republican can win is like when you see a Republican win the governorship in a very liberal northeastern state as a balance to Democrats. But I think that even that will be unlikely.
