These are extraordinary times in the history of freedom. In the Arab Spring, we have seen the broadest challenge to authoritarian rule since the collapse of Soviet communism. The idea that Arab peoples are somehow content with oppression has been discredited forever.
Yet we have also seen instability, uncertainty and the revenge of brutal rulers. The collapse of an old order can unleash resentments and power struggles that a new order is not yet prepared to handle.
Some in both parties in Washington look at the risks inherent in democratic changeparticularly in the Middle East and North Africaand find the dangers too great. America, they argue, should be content with supporting the flawed leaders they know in the name of stability.

Say JORGE? How ‘bout the North Korean WINTER after you sold out those poor bastards all for the sake of your ‘Six Party Talks’?!?
You actually took North Korea OFF the list of terrorist supporting nations, Jorge?
You’re a dumb azz.
W is clueless concerning Good vs. EvilJesus may be his favorite philosopher,
but not his LORD.
If the only muslims I personally knew were the Saudi royal family I might have the same opinion.
I always resented the left’s meme about W being dumb. I’m afraid to say in retrospect they may have had a point.
The rest of the so-called Arab Spring, from Yemen to Egypt to Libya, and more has nothing to do with liberty or Republican principles, it is really an Islamic Caliphate where Obama is supporting abject Islamic radicals and terrorists from the Muslim Brotherhood in Egyot to the Al Quida backed rebels in Libya.
What Fantasy is this???!!!!! Hello, has anybody really LOOKed at ME?
There might be a glimer of Arab Spring right after the Anbar Awakening, but now? NOW????? Where is the mooooslem democracy?
This article was extremely optimistic. His assumption that things will be better with the Arab Spring are as yet to reveal themselves. There is no guarantee that Egypt, for instance, will embrace freedom & democracy, rather that a radical muslim dictatorship. I'd say the latter is far more likely than the former.
GWB & the Arab Spring cheerleaders need to understand that democracy & the rule of law only flourish in well educated, moral societies. These traits are sorely lacking in muslim societies. As with the failed efforts to democratize Iraq & Afghanistan, we are just wasting money trying to civilize these people. They are perfectly happy to live as savages & resent our meddling.
I am sick of subsidizing one brute over another in crap-holes around the world. I would tell these people that I don't care what they do within their own country - they'll get no money from me, but if their evil affects me in any material way or spills over their borders, then I will crush them like a bug.
George has been delusional for awhile now.....
Yea, he kept repeating “Religion of Peace”, like the Mail Man saying “Nice Dogggie” when confronted by the unchained pit bull.
your analogy is spot on and all too vivid
He’s writing in code. He’s dog-whistling to the pro-American right.
You gave me a good belly laugh with that one!
However, I will see your “dumb” and raise you “evil.”
To close one’s eyes to the destruction Islam and its followers (and NOT its “high-jackers,” Mr Bush!) wreaked on our country while this man was in office, and for him to run cover for them during that time in office by inviting representatives of Muslim-Brotherhood-connected CAIR to the White House, instituting an annual Eid-el-Fitr dinner in the same location, and — this takes the cake — promulgating the meme that Islam is “a religion of peace.” The damage he has caused thereby has been incalculable, and simply furthered exponentially by the current “undocumented” curiously Muslim-like occupant of the White House.
People have said that Bush “prepared the way” for Obama. That would make him John the Baptist to Obama’s “Messiah.” The fact that both of these chief executives have a “thing” for Muslim, Islam, and — in a sickening way — for the biggest exporter of Wahhabist and/or Salafist imams in the world — the venal, corrupt, female-oppressing, Christian- and Jew-hating, “Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
Do a word-search on GWB’s article to which this piece links: I was unable to find a *single* occurrence of any of the following words: “Islam,” “Muslim,” “Brotherhood” (as in “Muslim”), “jihad,” or “sharia/shari’a” (as in “Law”).
Nothing like ignoring the elephant in the room, GWB!
This omission of the primary factors driving the “Arab Spring” is telling. It shows that — in his world view — GWB is a liberal, on the one hand, by denying the obvious (and ugly and deleterious) role that Islam plays in all that occurs in the region (see the State Department’s fantasy about attempting to “nation build” in a benighted hell-hole such as Afghanistan, where the “crime” of attending school is likely to get a pretty young girl a vial of acid thrown in her face), but — more importantly — it shows that GWB’s world-view is fundamentally NON-Christian, just as Obama’s is. While Obama is far more radical, Muslim, and evil than Bush, that does not relief Bush of the responsibility for his misjudgments and poor decisions that were born out of his faulty world view.
One more thing: Not only did GWB run cover for Islam and Saudi Arabia following the 9/11 attacks, it is clear to me that — with this article — GWB is actually running cover for Obama’s reckless and egregiously dangerous “contributions” to the Arab Spring — from throwing Mubarak overboard, to allowing Qaddafi to fall into the hands of thugs who sodomized and killed him without the benefit of a trial, to giving an entree to the Muslim Brotherhood in each of the countries that has experienced turmoil in that region in the past year: Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, Syria, and — in the very near future, it would appear — Jordan.
Bush, therefore, and Obama are, at root, more similar than they are different, both being committed secular-minded globalists/internationalists.
My suspicion is that history will properly place Bush at a low ranking in history — just above Carter, who will be just above Obama.
Oh, did I mention that GWB made Karl Rove his chief political advisor and Colin Powell and Condi Rice his two Secretaries of State? Case closed.
Kind of like, “family values don’t stop at the Rio Grande”, and “Jobs Americans won’t de-ew.
It appears to be a bit more of an “Islamist Spring” than anything else.
I am willing to bet, money, marbles or chalk, that in the end of this “ARAB SPRING”, these people will wind up with another a more monstrous leader than the the ones they overthrew. It’s the nature of this beast. Every 40 or 50 years or so, these people will throw out a monster they had, and replace them with a new monster that they elected. These people have no concept of a “DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC” that we have. For the last thousand years, this is all they know, and why would they want to replace it with something they don’t understand and never will.
Exactly and spot on.
Obama is an enemy to Israel and the United States. Has been from the get go. A few of us were trying to shout it forom the rooftops four years ago...but fwer too many were caught up in the manufactured “moment”.
Hopefully, it is not too late and they have witnessed enough ruin and felt enough pain to turn from their dillusion.
