Scientists discover 200-year-old shipwreck in the Gulf of Mexico

A 19th century shipwreck in the Gulf of Mexico has been discovered by scientists and online viewers on land using an underwater robot and camera, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports.

The wooden ship that has nearly all except its copper-sheathed hull disintegrated is approximated to have sunk 200 years ago leaving behind ceramic plates, glass bottles and boxes of muskets across the ocean floor.

Artefacts in and around the wreck and the hull’s copper sheathing may date the vessel to the early to mid-19th century,' Dr Jack Irion, a maritime archaeologist with the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said in a NOAA release.
