The text editor of the 1991 literary agency booklet that described Barack Obama as “born in Kenya” said Thursday the line in question was “nothing more than a fact checking error.”

Miriam Goderich issued a statement to the Political Wire saying the future president never suggested “in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii”:

“You’re undoubtedly aware of the brouhaha stirred up by Breitbart about the erroneous statement in a client list Acton & Dystel published in 1991 (for circulation within the publishing industry only) that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. This was nothing more than a fact checking error by me — an agency assistant at the time. There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more.”

Plus, one would think the former first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review would be a good enough editor to factcheck his own biography and catch a mistake ... if this is indeed a mistake. It reminds me of how Wikipedia listed Obama as born at Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu several years before it was changed to the new official Kapiolani Hospital.

I have lived in Kenya, Tanzania, Japan, Costa Rica and a bunch of other countries. Yet nowhere did anyone ever say I was born anywhere but Ohio USA.

Exactly. I cannot think of any instance where a public figure, born in the 1960s, has ever been widely and repeatedly misidentified as to the place of his birth.
