Two female students say they were not allowed to attend Lexington Catholic High School's prom as a couple Saturday night, upsetting a number of students at the school.
Hope Decker, 18, a senior, and sophomore Tiffany Wright, 16, had already gotten their dresses for the event, but Friday afternoon they were told by school administrators they could not attend as a couple because of the church's stance on same-sex relationships, Wright said.
In an email Sunday, Lexington Catholic president Steve Angelucci said, "As a Catholic high school, we uphold every teaching of the Catholic Church. The policies and procedures of our school reflect those teachings."
When the couple tried to enter the school's gymnasium, where the prom was held, they were turned away, so Wright said they held their own prom in the school's parking lot.
"I would understand and respect the school's decision if they truly upheld church teachings," Wright said Sunday night. "They didn't forbid the entrance of all the couples who've had premarital sex and all the kids who planned to get drunk after the prom."

Thinking again, Tax-Chick. Tsk. This seems deep-seated and habitual with you. Aren’t we just supposed to deplore and emote?
A few years ago, I sold a boat to a lesbian police officer. 9.7 on a scale of 10...her partner was 9.6. both of them in a BIKINI could make a man weep...
Very conservative! Their kids are polite and nice.
Yes, but it’s McDonald’s which said, “We do ‘it’ all for you.”
No. Age of consent in Kentucky is 16. Besides, pedophilia involves the abuse of a prepubescent. Ephebophilia involves the abuse of a postpubescent.
one of these girls is 18 years old and one is a minor. Wheres law enforcement on this obvious violation of the law?
both are within 3 years (if Tiff was 14, she could be arrested).
Oh, I can deplore and emote, too, especially when I have drink taken. However, a life of baby-care and other household triviality gives a lot of time for thought: I often compose long posts while nursing or cleaning up ... and then come back to find that someone else thought of the same thing faster ;-).
I think the time for “proms” and other formal dances has come and gone. At one time, formal-dress social events with dancing were a fairly common feature of adult life, even for the working class. Fraternal societies had balls, as did all military organizations, both for officers and for career enlisted people. My parents went to one or two a year, in the 1960s and 70s.
However, this is no longer typical. My husband and I haven’t been to a formal dance in 23 years of marriage, although he’s muttering about a “Regatta Ball” this fall, and I suggest he take Elen, since I have a baby. Most parents of today’s teenagers never attend formal dances, and neither will their children. Those of the class who do go to regatta balls or hunt balls (like my cousins on the “better than you” side of the family) take their adolescent children to these events at an appropriate age. High school proms certainly don’t provide the children of Pinehurst or Lexington “society” with their social training.
A lot of money is spent that neither school systems nor most families can afford to waste, and opportunity is provided for media grandstanding that does nobody any good.
So how do you propose going about figuring out which students are having premarital sex?
I looked up Battousai, it didn’t surprise me.
If an unmarried girl is pregnant, that would be a clue.
True, but then again, how many pregnant girls went to the prom?
Now that I could not say ;-).
Maybe they will have better luck at the Islamic prom...
Yeah, just what we need an entire student body composed of Marys, Katherine's, and a smattering of MaryKatherines, just to keep it fresh....
;o)
Two all beef Pattys comes to mind....
“Shocking. Not butch dykes”
They are young. Give them a few years.
Homosexuality is a strange sin; it tells on the face and body language if indulged in over time.
Of course, if you happen not to be Catholic, then our cultural traditions are a) probably beyond your ken and b) none of your business in any event.
The two ladies of ABBA got along well with Agnetha and Anni Frida, which are derivative of saints' names. I believe that neither was Catholic at birth and that, at most Anni Frida MAY have become Catholic when marrying her last husband, an Italian Count. Natalie (aka Natasha) Wood got along fine with her name as a Russian Orthodox as well and never sought a name change to "pop tart." She let her looks and talent and ladylike behavior do the talking for her.
Meanwhile, the aggressively secular can identify their offspring with names from pop culture like Brittany, or Lindsay, or Tiffany, or Miley, or Shania, or Charlize (almost vaguely derived from a saint's name with no corresponding effect on character or belief), or Madonna (with due apology to the Mother of God) or Bo (a lovely lady with Irish ancestry but no role model although she sure beats the hell out of Madonna in that category).....
I am betting that you have no legitimate complaint about a lack of variety of names but that it is the honoring of patron saints as role models that gets your goat. Either that or you have not thought this one through.
No.. at those prom the dates are either Camels, goats or young boys!!!
Perhaps, I was just asking a question, smart mouth
I would bet that young Tiffany's parents, filled with HOPE (you should pardon the expression) at her christening, were more likely to be thinking of the famous jewelry store and their ummmm, HOPE that little Tiffany would wind up with a vast collection of its product line. Whether Hope will buy her the famous Hope Diamond as part of an engagement ring remains to be seen. It was good enough for Liz Taylor and should be.... Of course, I am assuming that the elder Hope would be the "husband" and the younger Tiffany "the wife" but who knows for sure? After all, I must be an ageist among other things. (Oh golly, "ageist" does not show up as a misspelling and must already have been recognized as a word).
As Marcus Tullius Cicero used to say: O Tempora, O Mores!!!! Few of us are still alive to whom he personally said that!
Of course, before I was old and poor, I had no knowledge of McDonald's or Burger King much less that they could be differentiated. I did know that there were distinct differences between Chuck's Steakhouse, Sally's Pizza and, Sherman's Tavern on the Green, Poor Lads, Louis's Lunch (where you definitely got it their way and no ketchup allowed) and Marra's Restaurant. At fine dining establishments, you respected management enough to be happy to get it their way and regard it as your privilege to do so.
BK and Mickey D's, even for relentless populists, are the functional equivalent in the world of "restaurants" of voluntarily naming one's daughter Lindsay in the hope that she might emulate the egregious Ms. Lohan or someday marry the likes of Charlie Sheen, for that matter. Mr. Sheen is going to keep a generation of sensible parents away from the previously respectable saint's name Charles.
