Mitt Romney: Mormon Candidate at Baptist Liberty University Moves Catholic Editor
Catholic Online ^ | 5/14/12 | Keith A Fournier

Posted on 05/14/2012 9:41:32 AM PDT by tcg

...The fact that a Mormon, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, would be the commencement speaker at the Baptist University founded by Dr Jerry Falwell speaks to the urgency of the hour. Add to this the fact that this Catholic Editor in Chief of Catholic Online would consider the speech important enough to make it the lead article, and the point is made even clearer...

...The Romney candidacy raises a certain irony. Here we had a Mormon candidate who went to Liberty University and addressed a crowd which has major disagreement with his religious faith. However, it was this candidate who affirmed the fundamental moral values which inform the foundations of the American experiment in ordered liberty. He did so in a way which even made this Catholic Editor look twice at his candidacy.

I contend that I have more in common theologically with Liberty's Baptists as a Catholic Christian - though I am sure some present in Lynchburg on Saturday would disagree. However, Mitt Romney hit a home run in Lynchburg, Virginia on Saturday. That commencement address was not only a great speech, it also inspired me at an important moment.

...This Mormon candidate who spoke at that Baptist Liberty University is looking better and better to this Catholic citizen as the fall Presidential race approaches. The future of the American experiment in ordered liberty is at risk.We do indeed share common values which are essential for our future as a free people. Mitt Romney is correct, "we can meet in service, in shared moral convictions about our nation stemming from a common worldview."

Governor Romney did not attempt to argue the compatibility of his own religious faith and that of most of the graduates. I was relieved. He told the graduates and their guests, "People of different faiths, like yours and mine, sometimes wonder where we can meet in common purpose, when there are so many differences in creed and theology. Surely the answer is that we can meet in service, in shared moral convictions about our nation stemming from a common worldview." He is right.

I wonder how Christian it is to ignore Romney’s support of gay adoption while jumping up and down screaming about Obama’s support of gay marriage.

The Baptist church and this Baptist University as well as the Catholic church says that mormonism is a cult, which makes the following an understatement of major proportions:

addressed a crowd which has major disagreement with his religious faith

Only the godless share common values with the godless.

Well, the Catholic Church wouldn't use the word "cult" for Mormonism. It would use the word "heresy."

That said, I consider that my #1 priority in November is the removal from office of Barack Obama.

“The Baptist church and this Baptist University as well as the Catholic church says that mormonism is a cult, which makes the following an understatement of major proportions:”

Just because they “say” it doesn’t make it so! I just imagine there are faiths that consider Baptists and Catholics to be cults too, not that that is a true statement either.” I have not been a fan of Romney’s even though I was born a Mormon, but what he said at Liberty is right on the money. We are not electing a religious leader, we are electing a president.

Ronald Reagan could not have been an elder at my church but he made for an excellent president of the United States. If Romney wants to run my church, he’ll need to make huge changes in his beliefs first but it he wants to run my country, although I can think of many I’d rather see in office, he is far more qualified than the one that’s presently got the job.

All Christian churches agree that Mormonism is not a Christian religion, Orthodox to Methodist, Catholic to Baptist.

Everything Romney is, is because he is a mormon. If you understand mormonism you will understand Romney.
mormonism is not Christianity.

“Well, the Catholic Church wouldn’t use the word ‘cult’ for Mormonism. It would use the word ‘heresy.’

Excellent point.

Strictly speaking, if we followed the sentiments of those who have ruled out Romney because of his religion, we Catholics would not have been able to vote for any presidential candidate except Kennedy, because, in Catholic teaching, all the rest were either heretics or apostates.

So, although I don’t really understand Mormonism, and Romney is far from my first choice, I prefer him to the “christian” Obama.

Gay marriage? The Bible? Christian beliefs?

So when Mitt says Marriage has been ‘one man and one woman for thousands of years’ he does so as a person whose faith rewrote the cultural norms of marriage as recently as 21 years before Reagan was born. How can this be?

How is Romney more qualities than BHO? Their political records are the same.

Bull Romney is being ruled out because he is a liberal just like BHO. Romney is who he is because he is a mormon not in spite of it. You seriously need to learn about mormonism to know Romney’s core.

“... the Catholic church says that mormonism is a cult,”

I have Protestant friends who claim Catholicism is a cult. Name-calling isn't helpful.

Many claim obama is a muslim.
If I am forced to chose between a muslim and a mormon to be president...
I’m going with mormon.

Please elaborate: what is it about Mormonism that bothers you?
