My vet has to shave the Akita’s leg to get to the vein. This then becomes the dog’s hobby and he keeps it bald for a year by licking it constantly. None of the anti-lick compounds work, either.

I’m going to ask my vet about how he gets the vein on the first try. I’ve never seen a dog w/a hematoma from an IV. Never thought about it until you brought it up.

He needs to talk to the nurse who stuck my arm looking for a vein when I had my first eye cataract surgery a few months ago. She dug around with the needle looking for a vein (major hurt), then turned the arm over and stuck me on that side. When I finally got out of there, I had a huge hematoma on that first side. That blood traveled around and the arm looked like I was a druggie. Those were the worst sticks I have ever had and I am not squimish about needles. I would take your vet over that nurse any day.
