They are attempting to get some use from what may soon be government declared ‘idols’.

No, I do not believe destruction of ancient sites by Muslim fanatics is the case here.
What BHO2 has done is to destroy, via the Muslim Brotherhood, any emerging markets and modern economies that existed in northern Africa.
We can expect to see tens of millions of Egyptians, Libyans, and Tunisians starve to death in the next few years. Egypt has been a net importer of food for quite some time, and paid for the imported food with money earned by selling natural gas to the Israelis and tourism. No more. Times are going to be really tough for Egyptians in the future, just like it was under the Caliphs.
The area will be economically devastated and so people will do what they used to do in centuries past - dig up ancient artifacts to sell to whoever has money and wants to buy.
