(CBS News) Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Thursday that while he opposes same-sex marriage, he is "fine" with gay couples adopting children. The presumptive nominee also declined to criticize President Obama's reversal on the issue, saying he would "respect the right of the president to reach the conclusion he has."
In his most detailed comments to date on the issue of civil rights for gay people, Romney told Fox News television host Neil Cavuto, "I know many gay couples that are able to adopt children. That's fine. But my preference is that we ... continue to define marriage as the relationship between man and a women."
The statement seemed to put Romney in the position of condoning same-sex families with children as long as the parents do not marry.

How can I vote for that rudderless tool?
Romney has said that he supports the homosexual agenda more than Ted Kennedy did. Anything he says now must be run through that filter.
Anyway you look at it, Romney is a liar.
Years ago, I could never have dreamed that we would be turning children over to homosexuals and lesbians as something that they were entitled to be able to pick up at the orphanage (or it’s current equivalent) to keep.
For zero to win, this election HAS to be about issues other than the economy.
His team just: energized his base, made the election a civil rights issue, defined RINOmney as a anti-gay bully, etc.
Coincidence? I don’t think so...
I wonder how anybody, right, left or middle of the road, could support, or even make sense of, Romney’s conflicting positions on the two related issues.
I strongly oppose both, but it seems to me that if you support homosexual adoptions, you ought to support same sex “marriage” first. Is it better for a child to be adopted by a two homosexuals with no legal committment to one another than by two who are legally “married”?
Also, while I oppose same sex “marriage” for many reasons, in the end, it mainly, directly, affects the “couples” involved in it. Homosexual adoption directly and profoundly affects innocent children.
Obama’s friends in the news media - and that’s just about everybody in the news media - are trying to make gay rights a big issue. Like I said, Obama’s stand on gay marriage is going to cost him votes. Leave gay rights alone, and let Obama be on the defensive.
Pimping out orphans for political reasons is disgusting !
>>>Pimping out orphans for political reasons is disgusting !<<<
I might just make this my new tagline.
I don’t believe the convention will be brokered. I think the Republican party is perfectly satisfied to let Obama have his second term, so that they (the Republicans) can have the next term or two. That’s how it works, usually. I can’t see that anyone who can cause brokering is interested in doing it, particularly for the sake of finding a more conservative candidate.
And WHO would be the candidate from a brokered convention? Santorum’s been rejected (not that I cared for him), Newt is hated, I cannot see the upper crust of the party going with Palin. Who?
It’s just my podunk opinion that a brokered convention isn’t going to happen.
Exactly.
I was adopted out of foster care by married heterosexuals who physically, verbally, and psychologically abused the crap out me and my sister (also adopted) until I left home at age 17 and never looked back. I can't imagine that my childhood would have been any worst than what I endured simply because my adopted parents happened to be gay.
This all boils down to who you want nominating the next two Supreme Court Justices. Anyone ready to risk settling for another Obama term is risking everything in my view. I'll gladly vote for the nominee so this doesn't happen!.
Other folks can desperately twist themselves into pretzels trying to justify voting for this creep. I won’t. No matter how some try to fool themselves that he’s changed, his liberal core always outs itself.
I am so so sorry! As a former foster parent and adoptive parent, this absolutely breaks my heart to read. I know there has been so much abuse in the system that is absolutely wrong.
HOWEVER yes! The opening up of gay adoptions will make what you have gone through ( and no I am not minimizing your pain) pale in comparrison.
I’ve thought about the SC nominations that will be coming up. For Obama to be able to make those nominations would be a mega-disaster.
Of course Romney supports gay marriage. Nobody supports gay adoption, but says the adopting parents shouldn’t be allowed to be married. His actions in MA did more to usher in gay marriage than probably any other elected official in the country.
That’s not a reason not to vote for him IMO if/when the only other option is helping to reelect Obama.
Gay rights not being a big issue this election: Right again.
Obama losing vote on gay marriage stand; Dead wrong. Lose Black votes? Maybe less than .1%. Lose Women votes? Not over gay marriage. Lose Hispanic votes? Not with his trying to take over the Maricopa County Sheriff's Dept. Lose Jewish votes? Did you see Biden’s reception at that meeting in Atlanta?
Na, Obama ain't gonna lose a single vote over gay marriage because Romney will ‘evolve” over the campaign to be just an Obama shadow.
>>>Ive thought about the SC nominations that will be coming up. For Obama to be able to make those nominations would be a mega-disaster.<<<
I agree, but a lefty like Romney making those nominations would also be a mega-disaster. At least with Obama making them, the Republicans in the Senate would likely vote down (assuming they take the Senate) or fillibuster any especially radical nominees.
Romney could much more easily get a Liberal, activist justice confirmed.
