(CBS News) Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Thursday that while he opposes same-sex marriage, he is "fine" with gay couples adopting children. The presumptive nominee also declined to criticize President Obama's reversal on the issue, saying he would "respect the right of the president to reach the conclusion he has."
In his most detailed comments to date on the issue of civil rights for gay people, Romney told Fox News television host Neil Cavuto, "I know many gay couples that are able to adopt children. That's fine. But my preference is that we ... continue to define marriage as the relationship between man and a women."
The statement seemed to put Romney in the position of condoning same-sex families with children as long as the parents do not marry.

I started out with that position but have met far to many seriously brain screwed people who resulted from gay parents.
Romney is letting the Obama MSM control the narrative. Gay rights is not a big issue in this election. Obama is going to lose votes because of his stand on gay marriage. Time to get off the subject.
He needs to see the news photos of the freaky homosexuals in San Francisco leading little children around with dog collars and leashes.
Child abuse, pure and simple.
Boy, Romney’s got that etch-a-sketch working 24/7.
Yes, keep being Mr. Nice Guy. It worked so well for McCain.
I cannot believe that he said that. He’s a stupid, stupid man.
Sarah save me.
What about the children? Shouldn’t they have a say in this? Shouldn’t they be able to say, “I want a normal life with a normal family”?
For me, it’s the adopting children part of this gay marriage issue that is the most troubling.
Out of the fire, into the frying pan.
Romney is hurting himself on this issues by alienating everyone from faggots to Focus on the Family.
this makes me nauseous!!! As a adoptive mom of 5 adult children I cannot fathom the damage done to these already needy ones!! I truly am struggling this election....

CBS hoped to touch off a firestorm distraction with the question.
Romney either actually thinks this way, or he doesn’t feel like he knows how to defend the obvious moral position on the issue.
Either way, in the long run, this is going to lead to a split-up of the United States, and possibly a civil war with terrible consequences.
The effects of gay adoption won’t be seen clearly for years, when the children’s stories start to come out.
Take a good look at the goof balls getting married they look like fools..Lets work on getting fool and his bunch ofcriminals ourt of Washington...
I just dont understand...all he has to do is comment on the Economy, strong national defense/borders, and tax relief, and leave all the other social muddling alone, and he wins easily! Im also uncomfortable with his Romneycare history, some liberal social positions as governor, but Obama is actively trying to destroy my country. Im focusing on electing conservative congressmen, senators and local officials as the best way to get change...
Here’s the thing....and keep an open mind.
First, I agree somewhat with your comment. I think Romney’s waffling on the subject but he does somehow wiggle in the notion that children are better off raised by two parents of the opposite sex. It ain’t rocket science. Each parent brings something to the equation and it’s the difference in their genders that make a child well-rounded, loved and able to go on their own with all the elements of survival as was God’s plan.
BUT....a while ago I suggested, not on this forum but I do forget where, that perhaps homosexual parents could adopt children that no one else would adopt.
Like I said....open mind.
There are children so handicapped that no one is willing, of just can’t, care for them. They spend their lives in sterile, loveless institutions.
Well my comment caused a pile of rage...who did I think I was casting off handicapped children as second class...that sort of thing.
No. This is common sense.
I’ve a stepdaughter who couldn’t have children. When she went to adopt a child she was unable, I don’t know why, to get a newborn or even younger child to bring into her home to love and raise. I dunno, she was poor, didn’t own her own house....well I dunno why she couldn’t get a baby but she couldn’t.
She’s a nice enough person as I saw it but newborns often have a bevy of would-be parents vying for them.
Anyway, she was able to adopt a child who was very handicapped. I tell you, Mary(false name) has been the most devoted mother to this child. The child, now a teenager, is retarded and I think she’s considered autistic. She has to wear diapers and be specially educated.
Anyway, this child probably would not have been adopted had Mary not been able to get a newborn/young child.
It’s just common sense, the way it is...take your pick.
I think a child is better off with same sex parents if they are otherwise unadoptable and by my true example above, it’s not that I deem same sex parents as less than human no more than those in charge of adopting out babies deemed Mary less than perfect to get a very adoptable child.
Anyway, I know Romney couldn’t say that I suppose, darn there would have been a firestorm of condemnation.
My point being that if same sex parents really want a child so much they should be willing to take a child that would otherwise spend a sad life in a sterile loveless institution.
Never mind that this same child will not get the advantage of being raised by opposite sexed parents, to learn the ways of the species. For a severely handicapped child, that’s the least of their problems.
Just food for thought, don’t want to fight.
it’s worse than I though, and still going downhill. the smell of a brokered convention is getting even stronger
,....and if Romney doesn’t stand against Obama on this issue, we are once again without options. Maybe we DO NEED a brokered convention.
Going to give the Romney campaign a call today. Flood those phones with distain over this issue.
