O’Reilly Chides Jon Lovitz For His ‘Disrespectful’ Remarks About Obama

Jon Lovitz chatted with Bill O’Reilly on Wednesday about Lovitz’s profane comments about President Obama.

O’Reilly pegged the remarks as “disrespectful” — acknowledging Lovitz’s perspective, but asserting that anyone in the office of the presidency deserves to be respected.

“You were kind of disrespectful,” O’Reilly said. “Do you feel bad about that?”

“No, because you have to put it in context,” Lovitz replied, specifying that he’s a comedian, and the nature of that is to be “just open and honest.” What you can’t say on television, you can say in a private club, he said.

O’Reilly agreed, but noted that in today’s day and age, everything’s instantly shared online. Even though he’s “sympathetic,” he said, “I want the presidency, the office to be respected. I don’t want those people using those kinds of terms to describe any president. Do you see my point?”

In an ensuing segment after the Lovitz film clip, Dennis Miller put O'Reilly right in his place when defending his (Miller's) comedian friend Lovitz.

There was visible enmity between the two on the subject....but after saying his piece Miller backed off rather than fight with the host. The segment was very tense, in my opinion.

An unsmiling Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia Attorney General, also lambasted O'Reilly tonight in regards to the Norfolk racial beating and O'Reilly's week-long reportage of same. There was also thinly veiled hostility in the interaction between the two.

All in all, not a very good night for the Bloviator who is used to having his own way and the last word on everything.

I don't see his point, no. A comedian unleashing profanity about the president - any president - in a stand-up act in a private club for the amusement of customers who paid to hear him is not a problem. Wasn't when the target was Bush or Palin, isn't now. O'Reilly is making a silly argument in a vain attempt to win "fairness" points from liberals who've never worried about things like fairness.

If you read the whole article, Jon Lovitz caves in to O’Reilly. Another worthless “entertainer.”

Respect is earned.

Any excuse will serve a tyrant - Aesop

The tyrant always talks as if he's preserving the best interests of his people when he actually acts to undermine them. Ramman Kenoun

“Both oligarch and tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of their arms.” -  Aristotle quotes

Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the U.S. media. Noam Chomsky

It is a paradox that every dictator has climbed to power on the ladder of free speech. Immediately on attaining power each dictator has suppressed all free speech except his own - Herbert Hoover

Perhaps the fact that we have seen millions voting themselves into complete dependence on a tyrant has made our generation understand that to choose one's government is not necessarily to secure freedom - Friedrich August von Hayek

That's the ticket!

Why is it nobody screamed when "comedians" solicited presidential assassins against George Bush but the mildest rebuke of the current regime is seen as a Nuremberg crime?

BOR purposefully playing a strained center position so he can interview the president on his show at a future date. PERIOD!

I feel bad for laughing at this.

I just got done watching a program about Jonestown on History Channel Two.

They played an actual recording of Jones’last words and he sounded like he might have been high. He did a lot of drugs.

Do you happen to know how many days it took for the news of the deaths to reach the U.S.?

Because it actually is a fair-and-balanced show, unlike, say, ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN or Hannity/Rush. If you only want your viewpoint parroted back to you watch one of the other shows. O’Reilly is the show to watch if you like hearing debate and a variety of opinions on an issue. The typical trope for O’Reilly-haters here on FR is to post an opinion of O’Reilly’s that they disagreed with and then claim he’s an idiot and they’ll never watch the show. Which means you simply miss the point of a fair-and-balanced show where you’re going to be exposed to a mix of opinions you like and ones you don’t. With O’Reilly, you know you’ll almost always get to hear both opinions on an issue in a debate format. Which is what makes it one of the most interesting and entertaining news programs on TV.

I make it a habit to not watch his show because he is a loudmouth and believes his opinion is the only one with merit.

No, you have it 100% completely backwards. The people who host purely liberal or conservative shows are the ones who believe their opinions are the only ones with merit. Because O'Reilly always brings guests on who vehemently disagree with him or with each other, he proves that he respects and gives voice to a variety of opinions. You're free to dislike his aggressive personality, but I prefer to watch entertaining shows and not snoozefests where people do nothing but monologue endlessly or be "polite" and "civil" to each other. Yawn.
