A UN human official is urging the U.S. to turn over control of lands considered to be sacred to Native Americans, including the site of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, unveiled his recommendations in Geneva on Friday after completing a 12-day visit to the U.S. where he met with representatives of indigenous peoples in six states.
The fact-finder also had a chance to meet members of the Obama administration and briefed the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, but no member of Congress agreed to meet with him.
For over a century, he said, the government had seized lands and resources from Native Americans, removed children from their families and communities, caused the loss of languages, broke treaties with tribes and oppressed the indigenous peoples on the grounds of racial discrimination.
Mount Rushmore, a popular tourist attraction, is located in the Black Hills, which the Sioux tribes consider to be sacred and have territorial claims to based on an 1868 treaty.
Shortly after that treaty was signed, gold was discovered in the region, and the U.S. Congress eventually passed a law taking over the land.
'I'm talking about restoring to indigenous peoples what obviously they're entitled to and they have a legitimate claim to in a way that is not divisive but restorative,' Mr Anaya said.

...and I am ready anytime you want to try it!
Man. No kidding...
I have been interested in archaeology and anthropology for over 25 years and I am unaware Homo Erectus ever lived in North America.
Moreover, just about every large nation has an issue with what to do with indigenous people who once owned land that a majority took over.
It isn't just America or Canada. There are little tribes all over the planet that are dealing with how to keep their land and culture.
Plus, early American Indians were stone age hunters and warriors who were often constantly at war with each other, killing and torturing their enemies. These tribes often destroyed neighboring groups to take over THEIR land.
It wasn't romantic "Dancing with Wolves" kind of life.
If this UN Bureaucrat had lived then he would probably be the first one scalped.
Sure.
Why not?
Just a bunch of old white guys.
Who cares?
Absolutely not. Never.
I do fear, however, that our Dear Leader will bow and scrape his way into submission. Sadly, it wouldn’t surprise me.
LOL!! What you said. :)
Native Americans?
Don’t most all of us, like the Blue-eyed Squaw from Massachusetts, have a little Indian blood in us?
ping
“I say we take over the UN building in New Yuck, turn it into a gun range, and boot those idjits the hell out of America. Free range passes to all indigenous Americans, half price shooting for everybody else on weekends.
Whos with me?”
Aye Aye, Captain!
You just ruined a lot of keyboards with that one Joe, shame on you. :)
“Why would he be allowed in the US for such a mission?”
He probably lives here. His mission has nothing to do with Indian sensibilities and evertything to do with to do with ceding everything around us to the UN who are already riding heard on our own government agencies like the EPA. These busybodies plan to hang around around to pilot spaceship earth after they use the rest of us for fertilizer (These stewards of the environment will probably be eaten by rodents before they even learn to make a campfire).
Anyway, there are a few references to UN Agenda 21 on this thread. Click on the link on Post 11 to get an idea what they’re up to.
What about Americans? Don’t we have any “sacred land”? I mean, what could be more “sacred” to Americans than Mt. Rushmore?
Hey, do you always take the fun out of all parties?
