A United Nations investigator probing discrimination against Native Americans has called on the US government to return some of the land stolen from Indian tribes as a step toward combatting continuing and systemic racial discrimination. James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, said no member of the US Congress would meet him as he investigated the part played by the government in the considerable difficulties faced by Indian tribes.

Yes, on the Human Rights Commission.
Been watching "Dances With Wolves" too many times? Kidding. At the least, the different tribes recognized regional territory and butchered and raped and enslaved each other over territory. They were no more noble than the warring whites of Europe, they were just weaker when the Europeans arrived. Although, I will agree that when they said "I give up", the US fedgov screwed them many times.
It was a time when nations and peoples would conquer and build empires. It's long gone and time for everyone to get over it, except for some nations in Africa who still enslave, murder, rape, and war. Where's the UN outrage regarding Sudan, Chad, Congo, Somalia, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and others in Africa?
The self-righteous UN has no concern about them. They focus their outrage on whites and especially on Israel and on the so-called plight of few American Indians on reservations who don't want to join American society who live on the tax-payers. Sheesh, the various tribes are opening casinos every where in California and making a fortune. Boohoo.
That said, it was one of my greatest pleasures when some 100 of us bikers were invited to the Navajo Nation Capitol (Window Rock) on the way to the annual Rolling Thunder event in DC. They treated us with the upmost respect and lined the streets as we made our way to Capitol grounds. I will never forget the site of so many waving American flags and cheering us on. I get choked up just thinking about it.
As I've always said, some cultures are just better than others for the advancement of civilization and that includes the Navajos. The Navajos are a very patriotic people. Remember the code talkers in the pacific campaign in WWII? Their contribution saved thousands of GI's, which they were also. I salute them. The others who want to whine on their reservations and such tax-payer dollars, not much.
Guilty as charged, you Honor. When it is on it is difficult to turn the channel.
Yup...F the UN...get them the hell out of Manhattan. They have no right to be there. Period. A Bloody Period! It is time to rescind ‘Free Speech’ on that part of Manhattan where that ugly monstrosty we call the UN resides.
First of all, the UN absolutely should butt out....however...
The various Indian nations who fought over territory didn’t have written treaties with each other as were finally established with the US government. Treaties, according to our Constitution, are supposed to be the “supreme law of the land.”
Many of those treaties had compensatory provisions or promises which have not been kept, or are in default...as in back payment due.
Much of the land in Western states (for some socialist reason) is owned by the federal government and leased to ranchers.
If it can be shown that the federal government indeed owes certain Indian groups compensation, I’d much rather see that real estate in the hands of Indians than the frigging US government. And certainly not in the hands of some foreign power (like China for example)
If I remember correctly, traditional established Indian Nations are supposed to be just that....sovereign nations.
Return Europe to the Neanderthals.
I agree.
Now, why did they have that attitude? Let me tell you a little story.
One day in the 1870's, about the time the Sioux rose (I couldn't tell you which time), some Indians -- don't know what tribe, which band -- massacred a farm family who'd committed the grievous offense of farming while white, and minding their own business while white. Men all mutilated, women raped and then mutilated, children just mutilated, everybody scalped and dead. My great-grandfather, a young Irish kid who'd come out from Indianapolis where his daddy was a hotelier and his brothers were drunks in Daddy's hotel bar, was a white scout for George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry -- yes. The Seventh. They mostly shot buffalo, rode with the troops, and tried to stay out of trouble.
They heard about the farmstead massacre, so they rode on out to see about it. A baby boy was unaccounted for (I do seem to recall it was a boy), and it was thought that one of the raiding band had taken it with them.
Riding out following the Indians' trail, they spotted an Indian woman, a young woman not a squaw, sitting by herself under a tree -- nobody else around, all by herself, except that she had a baby with her. A white baby: they'd found the missing baby. They rode up to where the young woman was sitting, dandling the baby, and my great-grandfather looked down at her and she looked up at him. He said afterward he'd never forget the look in her eyes -- cold, black, bottomless wells of enmity and implacability. And without even looking down at the baby, in a twinkling she produced a knife and in one, fast movement, gutted that baby from crotch to neck, just eviscerated him. Great-grandfather said he didn't know how many times he and his companions shot her, but it was a bunch: they shot her to pieces.
That was what it was like to meet an Indian on the High Plains in the 1870's, if you were white. Now take the rest of it, and shove it. Not buying any of the white guilt you're selling.
LOL, yeah that will happen
How bout we give them the UN building in Manhattan and kill two birds with one stone?
yeah, you betcha
So...you had 2 mommies?...or 2 daddies? Help me with the math here.
You forgot to mention WHY were those white people in that area to start with. Oh, it was Indian territory and they were trespassing. I believe people trespassing on your land, killing your food, attacking your camps might just piss you off a bit, no? Sometimes it just makes me sick to hear the total snake venom excuses some of you use to justify your atrocities. I use the present tense “your atrocities” because you have no remorse and would have done the same thing had you lived back then.
At seeing a baby butterfly-filletted? You bet your ass, no remorse.
"Guilty as charged, you Honor. When it is on it is difficult to turn the channel."
It is actually a very well done movie. I also watch when it comes on. Interesting as I told others on another thread, the great plains Sioux were the least of the settlers problems for many years.
Like in the movie, Pawnee and other tibes were just blood-thirsty and were intolerant of other tribes. Pick your Indian.
But yet, they are all the "noble" peoples of America as recently portrayed in movies, while they murdered, butchered, raped, enslaved their neighboring tribes. While they often got a bad deal from the then US Fedgov (who doesn't), they were simple savages who couldn't progress from the stone age.
But they got casinos.
Give Constantinople, Egypt, and North Africa back to the Christians first.
