President Obama acknowledged Monday to a major union that he hasn't been "a perfect president," but stressed that he's stuck to his promise to keep working for them.
"When I was running for this office, I told people, I'm not perfect, I'm not a perfect man -- Michelle can tell you that," he said, straying from his prepared remarks, at the AFL-CIO’s Building and Construction Trades Department Legislative Conference, before adding that he's "not a perfect president."
Obama has, at times, had a rocky relationship with the labor movement, which spent hundreds of millions of dollars working to elect him in 2008 and is expected to do the same this year. He's been working to strengthen ties in recent months, and in February gave a combative speech attacking Mitt Romney's position on the auto bailout to the UAW.
Despite not being perfect, Obama said he's still worked with labor in mind. "I made a promise I’d always tell you where I stood, I’d always tell you what I thought, what I believed in and, most importantly, I’d wake up every single day working as hard as I know how to make your lives a little bit better," he said, drawing on lines he often uses at fundraisers, though not in official speeches.
