Sales of women and girls booms in Europe (slavery)
EU Observer ^ | 26.04.12 @ 18:21 | Nikolaj Nielsen

Human trafficking is booming in Europe, the Hague-based Eurojust, the EU’s crime-fighting unit, said on Thursday (26 April). But the number of cases brought against traffickers is grossly disproportionate to the number of reported victims.

“Something is wrong; not enough people are being brought to justice. One thing is sure is that it is a booming business,” said Michèle Coninsx, President-elect of Eurojust. Eurojust, which coordinates with national judicial authorities on serious cross-border crimes, is aiming to get member states to bring more cases to it.

Despite the alarming numbers, Eurojust handled 74 registered cases in 2009, up from only 19 in 2004. Yet the United Nations estimates that globally, the traffic of human beings nets some €32 billion every year. In Europe, the overall profit numbers are vague but officials say the rise in trafficking is indisputably linked to the massive profit returns.

One indicator is the sharp increase of trafficking when Bulgaria and Romania joined the Union in 2007. Existing organized crime groups in Europe, some based in the Netherlands for instance, used the opportunity to lure poor and poverty-stricken girls from these countries with promises of work. …

A 2010 opinion by the European Commission expert group on human trafficking found that member states are not investigating these types of cases because other crimes are easier, less expensive and more practical to prosecute.

The same year, not a single member state provided statistics on the number of cases and prosecutions involving human trafficking, says Eurojust. Consequently, the unit is pushing member states to oblige them to report and better monitor human trafficking.

“The obligation already exists for terrorism, and we want that to apply it to human trafficking as well,” James Thuy, Eurojust spokesperson told EUobserver.

Slavers should be drawn and quartered in the public square.

Agreed!

The trouble is few women get involved in prostitution without a pimp. While overseas I saw women being sold to bar owners. I ran across american girls who had been forced into prostitution and were too scared to even ask for help.

These girls can’t protect themselves and don’t exist without a pimp and a customer. BTW the worst pimps are usually women.

Reminds me of an old W.C. Fields line, “Children? I like children, girl children, about 19 or 20”.

Seriously I use to work with a guy who went to Bahrain to work for 18 months. He has daughters and the gents there would seriously offer him vast sums of money to sell them his blond hair blue eyed daughters.

More misinformation.

While customers are a requirement, pimps are not.

What is true is that freelancers who work a route of regular outcall clients rather than having a pimp or doing street and escort work rarely come to the attention of the gendarmerie or the press...unless they are murdered. This does not mean that there are not a lot of them.

No its not misinformation. The vast majority of prostitutes are not the high class variety that NJ Gov’s visit and pay $5000.

I posted zero about high class.

I posted that much of prostitution is paid sex workers who go to the clients location, an who work for themselves.

I pointed out that this business model seldom comes to the attention of law enforcement. None the less, there are more prostitutes working that way than there are streetwalkers and bar girls.

Pimps can still enter the picture if the prostitute feels a need for protection from the johns (always a good idea working street) but with many sub groups the prostitute may not feel the need enough.

The violent pimp with a string of girls thing does happen, and those will be the easiest pickings for a john to find. That is, however, only the most easily seen layer of prostitution.

I never said it was okay.

I said there is more prostitution of that business model than there is of the moreopen streetwalker model.

The diseases, damaged families for the johns, physical injuries and potential for rape or assault for the prostitutes remain.

I am not advocating it, just pointing out that streetwork is the tip of the iceberg, as it were.

I'm pretty close to 100% libertarian on most issues but don't support fully legalized prostitution for any age.

The problem is that the “product” in this industry is always someone’s body and bodily orifices. Not their skills, hard work, personality, etc. You can keep a pretty girl locked in a room, even drug her into a stupor, and johns will give you money for a few minutes with her. The girl is reduced to an orifice with less mental value than many farm animals or dogs. If you mistreat a working dog or horse, they wont be of much value to you. If you mistreat a cashier, their value will go down. But a prostitute will always have value as long as she's warm.

It is much different from nearly any industry where work ethic, skills, mental health and sobriety matter. Yes, there are high end prostitutes with special skills, acting, etc but there are more than enough johns who don't care about any of that.

I think it should only be allowed with very close oversight of the prostitutes to make sure they are not exploited. The free-for-all you see in some places in the world creates an open door for slavery.
