Meh, when Santorum dropped I think Newt probably thought there was a slim chance. Did you read FR, lots of people were still pushing for Newt. He was probably still getting some money. After last night and his spectacular loss in Delaware, even that would dry up. I mean, at this point he was becoming something of a joke and that would destroy any chance for him to be influential later.

Yeah, and maybe Newt himself has been reading too many adoring threads on FR!
Yesterday was the first voting since Santorum dropped out and Newt became the lone conservative in the race. Only with the results last night has it become clear that there will be no coalescing of the anybody-but-Romney vote behind Newt.
His money dried up some time ago. After Louisiana it was a joke that most everyone could see, him still staying in.
I know his die-hard supporters didn’t want to face it, but he was dead in the water then. Heck, he wasn’t really contesting primaries and caucuses prior to that either.
After his home state, it was over.
