How much would you pay for an amazing, state-of-the-art light bulb? Shoppers will be asking themselves that very question at Home Depot and other outlets starting Sunday Earth Day when the bulb that won a $10 million government contest goes on sale.
The bulb is the most energy-efficient yet, lasts about 20 years and is supposed to give off a pleasing, natural-looking light. But what separates it from the pack most is the price: $60.
That price reflects the cost of the components, especially the top-notch chips, or diodes, that give off the light, and is the price commercial customers will pay. But the manufacturer, Netherlands-based Philips, is discounting it right away to $50 for consumers, and working on deals with electric utilities to discount it even further, by as much as $20 to $30.
This means the bulb will cost anywhere from $20 to $60, depending on where it's found. Online, consumers will be paying $50 for each bulb, because utilities don't subsidize online sales.

All part of the plan.
There is NO proof that this lightbulb can go for 20 years.
last for 20 years if you leave it in the box
If it’s made in China, it’ll fry itself in two years, tops.
LOL. I never thought of it that way.
There is NO proof that this light-bulb can go for 20 years. There is NO proof that this light bulb can generate the light as advertised.
I believe that there is a light-bulb in a California fire House that has been lit for over 100 years. The secret is that it has a very thick carbon thread filament.
How long these things will last? Well I have had at least one LED flashlight that has died after only being used a few times. Cause of death was the electronic components not the LED itself.
"In that context, the $60 price tag has raised some eyebrows. Ed Crawford, the head of Philips' U.S. lighting division, said it was always part of the plan to have utility rebates bring the price down to the $22 range.
Hey there you go, promise you can do it for $22, as long as the taxpayer pays twice that much.
My stash of lightbulbs will last me at least 20 years.
My stash of lightbulbs will last me at least 20 years.
The magically assign a lifespan based upon the number if years it would take for it to make sense. Its a total scam. Or government has become our enemy.
The 10 million the government spent in this contest was also wasted. If it was such a great idea,,, a corporation would have happy done the research.
There are plenty of LEDs that are 30+ years old that still work just fine.
Powerful !

You must be talking about top-quality, military grade Chinese products.
$100,000,000,000 Spent On Green Energy and I Didn’t Even Get A Lousy Hempcloth T-Shirt.
We will never know if this bulb can last 20 years since it was just developed recently. The 10 year claim was made about the CFL and so far I have had to replace all 15 of mine within 3 years of getting them.
Thank you know all seers in Washington for making our lives good, thank you.
The third image purports to show a side by side shot of the bulbs on. I don't know the wattage. Should be much cheaper Real Soon Now.
I know! I know!! These light bulbs ONLY last as long as claimed ONLY IF THEY ARE NOT USED...
Me too. We’ve been buying up for a few years now! Bulbs and plastic bags.
