He didn't get the phone, he got the phone bill which indicated a number of calls on February 26th.

Good point. That makes sense. I wonder why he wanted to find out the pass code. I wonder if the police had asked him for it? If he was able to get the record of who the calls were to and from there wouldn’t be much use for having the pass code, would there?
