A Summerlin resident acted in self-defense and will not be charged in the fatal shooting of an unarmed backyard intruder last month, officials at the Clark County district attorney’s office determined.

The screening unit at the district attorney’s office, which reviews all incoming cases, made the determination April 12, closing the case, Assistant District Attorney Chris Owens said.

The shooting happened the morning of March 20 in the 2100 block of Spurs Court, near Hualapai Way and Sahara Avenue. The resident, who called 911, told Metro Police he fired shots at a backyard intruder, later identified as 19-year-old Demarcus Carter, who the resident believed was trying to break into his home.

Ok, I don't get it. I don't think this scumbag was actually a violent criminal. From reading the story, it looks like he was just looking for an empty house to rob. This homeowner did not answer the doorbell, so Carter did a little B&E. Carter had already been casing places and ringing doorbells at a few other houses before settling on one that supposedly had no occupant.

Anyway, this homeowner was well within his rights to do what he did, but it was rather excessive given hindsight. Now, to my point, why the heck would something like this be ok, while George Zimmerman gets charged with 2nd degree murder for killing a guy that was beating his head into the pavement?

I did contact her and said she should complain to whoever wrote the headline. The article was actually well written. She replied and thanked me!
