Sometimes, capturing a Taliban commander requires vast resources and complex operations. Last week in eastern Afghanistan, it required neither. Mohammad Ashan, a mid-level Taliban commander in Paktika province, strolled toward a police checkpoint in the district of Sar Howza with a wanted poster bearing his own face. He demanded the finders fee referenced on the poster: $100.
Afghan officials, perplexed by the mans misguided motives, arrested him on the spot. Ashan is suspected of plotting at least two attacks on Afghan security forces. His misdeeds prompted officials to plaster the district with hundreds of so-called Be on the Lookout posters emblazoned with his name and likeness.
When U.S. troops went to confirm that Ashan had in fact come forward to claim the finders fee, they were initially incredulous.
We asked him, Is this you? Mohammad Ashan answered with an incredible amount of enthusiasm, Yes, yes, thats me! Can I get my award now? recalled SPC Matthew Baker.
A biometric scan confirmed that the man in Afghan custody was the insurgent they had been looking for.
This guy is the Taliban equivalent of the Home Alone burglars, one U.S. official said. Wanted posters are often distributed by NATO forces, but rarely have such a direct impact on the apprehension of an insurgent. In restive Paktika province, civilians are typically afraid to pass on intelligence that might lead to an arrest. And insurgents tend to shy away from the urban centers where theyre being hunted, particularly while carrying evidence of their own transgressions.
Officials have guessed at what the unusual details of Ashans arrest might tell us about the state of the insurgency its desperation, its lack of resources, its defiance of law and order.

Did they pay him the money?
So, when does Obama plan to appoint him to the team that negotiates with Iran?
Thanks mandaladon.
I think they should pay him...after all he met all the criteria on the poster.
Hand him a nice crisp C note and then blow his brains out.
Maybe Obama can find a workable compromise. Give him a green energy grant. Or a job with NASA’s Muslim Outreach.
General Aladeen ,The Dictator (2012) ?
More evidence how stupid they are. We should try candy-grams next. “Candygram for Mohammed! Candygram for Mohammed!” Or my other plan where we place a bunch of strap on explosives on the ground in an open field and dress up a bunch of manequins as Rabbis that have speakers in them that say “Oy veh! Mohammed is a putz! Mohammed is a schmuck!” and you simply lure the terrorists into that field and run away and watch as they blow themselves up faster than popcorn in a microwave.
Even the Taliban is a more transparent administration than the 0 admin.
Count him as “hazy on the concept”.
Misdeeds? Misdeeds?!!! TP'ing a house when you were a kid is a misdeed. Launching bombings where a mop is needed to gather up all of the victims' remains is hardly a misdeed. Kill him.
I wonder if George Zimmerman's actions would be so characterized by the Washington Post? Hmmmmm.
They didn`t read him his rights so they had to let him go.
David Lawrence.
Get it in your head. Get it straight . Get it clear.
Give him the reward and then shoot him.
Make this guy Taliban Relations Czar and a speaking tour of college campuses to build understanding and peace.

Rush was wondering if the New Black Panthers would be giving Zimmerman the million dollars when he turned himself in.
This is the result of centuries of marrying first cousins to each other.
That is what I want to know
TT
I was hoping that he turned himself in to the “72 Virgin Dating Club” ... I understand that they will “Hook You Up”
Guess now that we have a Muslim President, things may have changed.
(wish I could do pictures... at least cut and paste)
