Ohio baseball player can’t walk at graduation after caring for cancer-stricken mother

A 17-year-old varsity baseball player in suburban Cleveland is being banned from walking at his own graduation for racking up two too many unexcused absences. While those circumstances might be considered the fault of the athlete in most cases, Carrollton (Ohio) High senior Austin Fisher's case is a rather extraordinary one: His absences were all brought on by time he spent caring for his mother, who has spent the past six years battling breast cancer.

As reported by Cleveland Fox affiliate WJW, Fisher has missed 16 days during his senior year, none of which have technically been excused. The Carrollton school district caps the number of absences allowable for a student to walk with his or her graduation class at 14, a number which means that Fisher will not be able to walk across the stage with the rest of his classmates.

For Fisher and other seniors at the school, that seems extremely unfair, particularly because all of his absences were brought on by his own heroic efforts to care for his mother, as he is the only other person who lives in their household. When Teresa Fisher became too sick to work, Austin Fisher took on two different jobs to help pay the bills. On a number of other days, Austin Fisher missed school so he could run his mother to cancer treatments and then care for her when she was bedridden after returning home.

“You never know how much time you have left and that was one of her big [goals] — to see me walk and get my diploma and go off to college. I wouldn’t change it, everything I did. Family first.”

Wow! He loves his family. If he is Christian that would be five reasons to punish him.

Great news! I guess the national pressure was enormous! They had no choice but to cave.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

The problem is that these are unexcused absences. Can’t his MOTHER, the one’s he’s caring for, call the school and get them excused?

When I was in high school, all it took was a call from a parent and my absences were excused.

It is difficult for me to believe anyone could be this out of touch, even an administrator.

10 years ago I would agree with you...however, I have since dealt with admin types and paper pushers a lot.

You are dealing with some of the most linear thinking folks on the planet when you talk to a public school admin type. Their number 1 job is "don't get sued." Job #2 is "if you get sued, make sure you followed every policy to the letter so the dollar amount you pay out is as small as possible."

That is why you see stuff like this....they have to follow the policy book verbatim and each new little snag caused by "life" creates new pages in the policy book.

I had the same scam in high school. It was the “pay $50 for your high school yearbook or you don’t graduate” scam. I was also on the varsity basketball team, had 2 jobs to help out my parents who were struggling and still managed to get on the deans list and they still didn’t give me my walking papers until embarrassingly my mom knew from another parent.

Every single graduate should inform the school, no one walks, no one attends the ceremony, if this kid don’t.

End of story.

Send the message to these government employee lunatics.

This is a further anecdotal indication that the average public school administrator is a blithering idiot.

Those who can, do.

Those who can't, teach.

Those who can't teach, administrate!

“If this was downtown Cleveland...”

For the record, Carrollton, Ohio is 85 miles SE of Cleveland, Ohio...not even close. Kind of like saying that Chicago is suburban Milwaukee. Carrollton is closer to Pittsburg than it is to Cleveland. That all being said, the Carrollton school administration is infinitely stupid.

Great, now add guilt to his mother just what she needs right now. School officials - if they were rated on common sense they would get an ‘F’. So much for the ‘educated’.

What a sweet and loving kid. Those ‘officials’ may one day need someone and no one will be there. Life has a way of teaching what we are too hard nosed to learn when given the opportunity. What you sow you reap.

Here in Wisconsin, there are doctors standing on street corners waiting to sign excuses. Oh, never mind - those are just for the teachers...

Good question. When I was in HS, my friend’s mother died and they told her she still had to come to school.

Why on earth do people send their kids to public schools?!?!

I agree. Probaly a lot of girls are already interested in him?

I imagine this kid will get a standing ovation when he walks to get his diploma?

“Every single graduate should inform the school, no one walks, no one attends the ceremony, if this kid don’t.”

That is exactly the answer. The bastard that made this decision is a bully and a coward. Their worst fear is mass disobedience,,someone standing up to them. They count on their title, office, and position to inspire fear.

These administrators are like an armed robber with his hand in his pocket, pretending he has a gun. If you turn and challenge him head on,, he goes into a panic.
This school needs a lesson about who is really in charge.
