Rick Santorums exit from the Republican presidential campaign is a win for the Republican establishment, but it is a win that has revealed the desperate weakness of the Republican Partys Washington insider culture.
Now completely dominated by acolytes of the Bush family, the Republican Party at the national level has no real philosophical core it is merely about holding onto power.
But this is not power as it is understood in high school civics classes the ability to use the levers of government by holding elective or appointive office. The power that the insiders of the national Republican Party seek to protect is the power to receive a share of the spoils from the looting of beyond-the-Beltway America.
The dirty secret of Washingtons inside culture is that the lobbyists, influence peddlers, access sellers and professional political operatives who make-up the inside elite of the national Republican Party will get paid no matter who is President.
Indeed, it may even be more lucrative for them if Obama is re-elected while the House remains in Republican hands. While there would be no ambassadorships handed out to bundlers and major donors, imagine the vast fees that can be generated through lobbying and the constant political warfare that are the hallmarks of divided government.
The Santorum candidacy, and those of the other conservative candidates in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, represented an existential threat to the insider culture that now dominates the Republican Party at the national level.
The last thing the Republican establishment wants is a newly elected conservative President arriving in Washington at the head of a vast citizen movement committed to change and to ending earmarks, midnight tax breaks, crony capitalism and other abuses.
The Republican establishments commitment to repeating the strategy that led to the defeat of John McCain appealing to moderate to liberal voters, while ignoring grassroots conservative concerns is indicative of their desperation to hold on to power and their complete indifference to actually winning the political and philosophical battle about undoing the welfare state and instituting fiscally sound constitutional government.
The GOP-e does not really care if Obama wins. They know that their lush payoffs will take a serious blow if the Tea Party gets into power.
This has been obvious for some time. It's a disgusting, criminal, mindset that is anti-American in values and ideals. They're all crooks.
PATENT BULLSHIT!!
It really is time for a new party. Not just a Tea Party operating under the Republican banner but a stand alone Tea Party running its own candidates.
Reading this makes me want to not vote for Romney. Fortunately for me, in Texas it won’t make a difference whether I vote for a Presidential candidate or not. The other races are important, though.
I will vote for Newt in the primary (5/29).

It is obvious the the GOPe doesn’t want to win.
List Obama’s atrocities(at least 100), and not a peep out
of these traitors!!!!
I recommend Conservativehq.com for all those of you who call yourselves true Conservatives. Richard says it like it is...
Did you read the article or just the headline?
” It really is time for a new party. Not just a Tea Party operating under the Republican banner but a stand alone Tea Party running its own candidates.”
It would take too much money to start a new party. The Tea Party needs to run these RINOS out of office.
Many of us have understood this for some time. Ever since McCain threw the election it was obvious.
Uh... Santorum's campaign itself was a "win" for the Republican establishment.
It's insulting how he managed to sell anyone on the idea the former 3rd ranked Republican Senate leader, one with a penchant for "taking one for the team" over his supposed conservative values, was not establishment.
But, they argue, Newt was Speaker... Ah... but Newt was overthrown by the establishment and pushed out.
This is probably so. I hadn't understood that , before.
The GOP-e have become timid and fearful of a beautiful grass roots conservative movement that if supported could have given them and all of us ownership of the government for the next forty years or longer!!!
That wasn’t nice and furthermore it wasn’t true!!!
I will too- if he's still in it.
The Capital needs to be moved out of DC and rotated amongst the States
I guess the elites do have an interest in keeping the economic machine well-oiled and working so they can skim their cream off the top. The Obama radical lefties want to completely destroy the economic capability of our country and control us completely.
Given no other choice, I guess I had rather be a pack mule for the elites, hoping one day to flee the farm, than to ride the leftist ship to the bottom of the sea.
