Gingrich’s latest endorser believes he can still win it
Daily Caller ^ | 4-12-12 | Levinson

The Republican presidential primary has been pronounced over, but against the odds, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich remains in the race.

Even more improbably, the former speaker is still getting a slow trickle of endorsements from politicians who seem to genuinely believe he has a shot at the White House.

The Daily Caller caught up with the latest politician to endorse Gingrich, Delaware State Senator Dave Lawson, whose endorsement was announced on Wednesday after Rick Santorum dropped out and the vast majority of pundits declared the race at the end.

“The race isn’t over until the votes are counted, and so I don’t believe the race is over,” Lawson told TheDC. “I believe that Speaker Gingrich certainly has a very good crack at this nomination; I believe he certainly has the right attributes to work toward putting this country back on its feet.”

Lawson said he did not decide who to support until recently. If Romney does become the nominee, Lawson said he’ll “absolutely” support him, but until then, he believes Gingrich is the best man for the job.

“With his experience, his knowledge, his commonsense, his very logical approach, I think that he’s something that this country needs,” Lawson said.

“He totally loves this country,” he added. ”He believes in it from stem to stern.” (RELATED: Full coverage of the Gingrich campaign) Ads by Google

Asked why he believed Gingrich was still in the race given all of the calls for him to drop out and the fact that even he has admitted that Romney will likely be the nominee, Lawson just laughed.

“Reagan didn’t win anything until he got to North Carolina,” he said. “We’re not to North Carolina yet. And then Reagan ended up taking the presidency, obviously.”

Lawson likened Gingrich’s situation to his own in 2010, when he ousted a 36-year incumbent against the odds.

“We’ve had so many upsets and so many news media election results long before the results were in, and that’s what they’re doing now,” he said. “Everybody’s going, ‘He’s [Romney is] obviously heir-apparent.’ There is no such thing as an heir-apparent in politics.”

I will still vote for Newt. I think a TEXAS vote counts for three (remember LBJ).

There is nothing wrong with having hope that the last conservative left in the race can still win...

...just as long as we all remember that the prime directive is to beat Obama.

“the collective and coordinated vitriol and false or misleading accusations against Newt Gingrich by virtually all in the GOP Establishment, led by the so-called conservative media, is unprecedented.

Twice he has arisen, after being vilified and shunted aside, to challenge Mitt Romney and perhaps win the nomination; but the fact that he has been successful in fighting for conservative ideals but in an unorthodox and often contentious, and at times unreliable, fashion has the Establishment in near hysterics.

All the other challengers were easily eliminated or made irrelevant, as they did not have the money or experience of knowing how the game is played, but Newt refused to just slink away. Never has the Republican Establishment trained its guns on any one candidate in such an unbridled and unrestrained way.”

“i really don’t understand why more people have not voted for newt”

Romney bought Florida with $17 million worth of false, slander and misleading advertising against Newt (vs $4.8 million for all the other candidates) and got the not so subtle support of the entire GOP establishment, including all the so-called “conservative” pundits and media.

“I’m in, til Newt’s out.

I’m with you on that one ALL THE WAY”

So am I.

The GOP will implode next November. It’s probably the right time for Newt, Sarah Palin, Gov.Perry, Bachmann and the Tea Partiers to unite and create a Conservative Party from scratch.

..just as long as we all remember that the prime directive is to beat Obama.

"WE" already know mitt will not stand a chance once he is vetted as he is WEAK in his accomplishments and couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag. He won't have media support like he has all along.

That's why 'WE" support NEWT while those 'anyone but barry' voters are hoping for the best. They aren't bright enough to know, they NEED to VOTE FOR THE BEST - NEWT!

I don’t think NEGATIVE like you. Newt WILL win! What are you doing to ensure that? Do you feel ‘entitled’ to something great when doing nothing to get it? Did you send in a donation to Newt?

Unlike all the others who dropped out, Newt has always been in it for real, and he would not still be here if he didn’t think he could have some positive effect. If he drops, you know it’s over. He’s suffered mor ehardships/attacks than all the rest combined, but he’s a WARRIOR and not a metrosexual pussy. Newt...Newt...Newt...

...just as long as we all remember that the prime directive is to beat Obama.

The prime directive is to defeat the Dem libs and the GOP elite libs. The greatest threat to the country is the back stabbing GOP elites. We could exile Obama to the moon and there will be a long line of replacements. Both parties are run by the same type of behind the scenes people. They all have similar goals and as long as they can get us to support the lib with an “R” by his name, they still win.

Now that Rick is out, why isn’t their a sea change of support for Newt?

When Perry dropped out, some of his supporters switched rapidly, some, the more dedicated, switched slowly. Ditto with avowed Cain supporters.

The Santorum supporters on here are a passionate bunch about their candidate, and their guy has only been out for a couple of days. Give them time to mourn.

You took the words out of my mouth. Shifting to the grown up, over Romney, is the no-brainer and the only choice of conscience for pro-lifers and constitutionalists.

The above facts need desperately to be expanded on, but regardless today America voters have to be drug over any line kicking and screaming because they want simple things that will come easily.

A fight for delegates “is just too hard”, because the media has said, convincingly, that it’s over when it’s but half over.

Marxist are much more motivated. They’re younger and stronger and more determined, and mostly deceived. Compliments of our tax funded education of indoctrination system.

My 2 cents.

Some of us still might get the chance to vote Newt and will

I am beginning to be of the mind now that if Romney is the nomination (shudder) instead of third party and only to get rid of the race baiting hate monger we have now - I might vote for him

Did you send in a donation to Newt?

I did today. I want him in until the convention. You never know what could come out of Romney's mouth between now and then, that could affect his tepid favorability.
