Santorum Says He Dropped Out Because He Ran Out of Money
National Journal ^ | April 12, 2012 | Jonathan Miller

Two days after leaving the Republican presidential-nomination race, Rick Santorum said on Thursday that the main reason he dropped out was that the campaign simply ran out of money.

“We were just burning through cash at a rate we couldn't maintain,” the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania said on Tony Perkins’s Today's Issues radio show, noting that the campaign for the first time started to go into debt. “Super PAC money didn't pay the bills on the campaign.”

Santorum suspended his campaign one day after his 3-year-old daughter, Bella, who suffers from a rare chromosomal disorder, was released from the hospital. On Thursday, he did not mention his daughter or her health issues as a factor in his decision.

Santorum said the decision to suspend his campaign came after the primary loss in Wisconsin, which he and his team felt they had to win.

“In the week after Wisconsin, we basically raised no money,” he said, noting that the campaign had sent out requests for donations. “People were e-mailing back saying the race was over.”

In Pennsylvania, Santorum said, he would have had no money to spend on advertising against front-runner Mitt Romney’s millions.

“We were probably looking at not being able to spend a penny on advertising,” he said. “You want to compete, but we felt we couldn’t.”

The campaign also looked ahead to what was deemed as a favorable calendar for Romney. “It seemed unlikely — reaching the point of impossible — to stop Romney,” he said. “We thought, ‘Maybe it’s time to stand down.’”

That said, Santorum said he did credit his rival with shaping the media narrative.

“I give Romney a lot of credit in that he was able to more effectively spin the media,” he said.

“There is no state that Romney won that was not a result of his money advantage.”

Romney won’t have the money advantage against Obama, and the free positive publicity Obama will have from LMSM will be priceless.

If only voters would depend on their own research, rather than believe the countless attack ads that rich candidates can afford.

When I lived in PA (Not since ‘88), all that appeared on the ballot was the name of the delegate, without saying which candidate the delegate was committed to (if any). However it appears it is still that way.

From greenpapers.com:
Tuesday 24 April 2012: Pennsylvania Presidential Primary. 59 of the Commonwealth’s 72 delegates to the Republican National Convention will be directly elected (their names appear on the ballot) in a LOOPHOLE type primary, in which delegates are elected separately from a presidential preference “beauty contest”.

Sunday 10 June 2012: Summer Meeting. The Pennsylvania Republican State Committee will meet to choose 10 at-large delegates.

The at-large delegates, chosen by the state’s Republican State Committee, will go to the Republican National Convention officially “Unpledged”. [Rule 8.3] In addition, 3 party leaders, the National Committeeman, the National Committeewoman, and the chairman of the Pennsylvania’s Republican Party, will attend the convention as unpledged delegates by virtue of their position.

So voters still vote for the delegate, and the delegates with the highest totals in each CD are elected. The vote for President has nothing to do with the selection of delegates. Each CD elects 3 or 4 delegates.

Are any FReepers voting for Santorum in the remaining primaries ? Just curious- we had our primary a few months ago . Looking at Texas - i think the primary is May. As of yesterday Santorum was on the ballot there and listed on the TX SOS website. Dont know if they
would have enough time to reprint ballots.!?!

I expect to vote for Santorum in TX on May 29 if his name is on the ballot. Also for Ted Cruz for the Senate nomination.

What a loss...and what a class act.

I agree Mary. We saw him in Arlington Heights, IL, 3-16-12. It was electrifying in a very "real" sense. No pretension; just honest hard-working folk of middle income or thereabouts. Link

The only thing I wish Rick would have done (and this was evidently a campaign decision not to) was to mention his faith more frequently. We read in one of Rick's interviews, that 35% of the evangelicals who voted for him thought he was an evangelical, with a lower percentage knowing he was a Roman Catholic.
