I wish this story was more detailed. When one becomes involved in genealogy, it’s surprising what comes up.

In searching for my family genealogy, I found my great grandfather was a Civil War veteran who served in the 181st Ohio Volunteers and fought with Grant in the Wilderness campaign. His grave is proudly marked with a small plaque from the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).

I hope she able to get her free VA headstone for this Union Vet.

Yes, they will provide for CSA vets as well, marked as CSA.

Headstones

UPRIGHT TYPES:

These headstones are 42 inches long, 13 inches wide and 4 inches thick. Weight is approximately 230 pounds. Variations may occur in stone color, and the marble may contain light to moderate veining. (Shown is the Upright Marble)

They exist, saw several when checking for names at a cemetery in Tucson a couple of years ago.

Shame the VA can’t afford to take care of living vets today....

I’ve been living in Washington state for decades and only two years ago discovered that we have a local civil-war ear cemetery. It holds the earthly remains of several MOH recipients.
