Anyone who has read Derb in our pages knows he’s a deeply literate, funny, and incisive writer. I direct anyone who doubts his talents to his delightful first novel, “Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream, or any one of his “Straggler” columns in the books section of NR. Derb is also maddening, outrageous, cranky, and provocative. His latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible. We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways. Derb has long danced around the line on these issues, but this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation. It’s a free country, and Derb can write whatever he wants, wherever he wants. Just not in the pages of NR or NRO, or as someone associated with NR any longer.
“....which is code for what most of them will never say aloud or even let themselves think.”
You are right about that.
Actually, Derb is a math guy. I suspect you are thinking of Theodore Dalrymple, who is also a fantastic writer!
I swore I would comment less on this site but can’t help myself after reading all the great comments. I cancelled NR a couple years ago now because of their cowardice on the eligibility issue. Funny thing is one of the reasons I read the article before the brouhaha is because I no longer visit sites like NR.
(10a) Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally.
(10b) Stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.

In an amazingly timely earlier post here on FB, you may watch a video of a white tourist in downtown Baltimore being assaulted, stripped, and robbed by a gang of Holder's people, as more of Holder's people stand by and laugh. The poor sap's father should have had the talk with him.

Dalyrimple.... Derbyshire...
Dang it....
I get those names confoosed.... argh
Good advice, heartwood.
I related a story yesterday about a Vietnam vet who got shot dead by one of Holder’s “peeples.”
His big error was opening his door and giving free bags of groceries to poor people.
“Derbyshire and Steyn were the only reasons I renewed my NR subscription for as long as I did.”
That makes two of us. It’s pretty sad that now the only part of the magazine of any worth is the last page; the rest isn’t even fit for duty in the birdcages.
NR has utterly disgraced itself here.
FUNR!
I stopped visiting NRO when most of my comments - usually about their support for Mitt - were not posted.
Now it is time to delete the bookmark. Derbyshire’s problem is that mathematicians are used to looking at numbers, not hiding them.
NRO is “The Voice of the Establishment GOP”.
I could NEVER stand that metrosexual prick Lowry. I’m glad others are seeing him for what he is.
Yes. It is important and it just happened.
Come to think I haven’t visited NRO hardly at all for the past couple of years. Mostly just to read the occasional Steyn column linked from Steynonline
Derbyshire’s rules are really nothing but common sense. I was doing that 43 years ago when I lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, when the KKK was still a force. Now it is mandatory to follow those rules to keep safe.
I sent that web page to my brother-in-law who lives in the Memphis area. He has been following similar rules for his lifetime.
You’re referring to the excellent British writer Theodore Dalrymple. I think his latest book is”Life at the Bottom”.
I knew there was a problem at NR when the founder died and his son
(Christopher?) wrote an article that read like it belonged in The Nation.
Apparently it was in Taki’s magazine -a webzine. I tried to access it directly from the website and was unable to. I think they must have pulled it entirely.
The link to Derb’s piece in TakiMag is below.
The site has been hit with high traffic/D.O.S. attacks since the article was posted so it is hard to get through.

Nonsense.
