Anyone who has read Derb in our pages knows he’s a deeply literate, funny, and incisive writer. I direct anyone who doubts his talents to his delightful first novel, “Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream, or any one of his “Straggler” columns in the books section of NR. Derb is also maddening, outrageous, cranky, and provocative. His latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible. We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways. Derb has long danced around the line on these issues, but this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation. It’s a free country, and Derb can write whatever he wants, wherever he wants. Just not in the pages of NR or NRO, or as someone associated with NR any longer.
“I suspect that the black culture manufactured by the sociopathic elements of the black community elevated to leadership by the media and liberals has caused black IQ to deteriorate.”
I’m not disagreeing with you, but you cannot let the Public Schools and the Teachers’ Unions off the hook for the disasterous state of the intellect and knowledge among black people today.
I can sometimes think it was all a part of a big, commie plot, to dumb down the American people, deprive them of any sense of civic virtue and then keep us all, black and white and all the rest, under the boot heel of government.
Or, maybe they are just stupid and greedy. I’m really not sure, but they are very much to blame, at least in part.
Very good post. A pack of hyena's will get their prey to tire itself out by running away in the direction they want it to run and tire itself out, the prey will do their work for them. The RINO run "head the tall grass" instinct leads to the GOP carrying out the left's agenda.
It was a mis-use of statistics to suggest a larger problem than really exists, in order to justify a wholesale treatment of a race of people differently because of the actions of a few.
It was the basic fallacy of the stereotype. So there was one incident in a theme park. Does that mean that you need to avoid ever going to a theme park anywhere if you find out there is a “minority” event at the park? That’s what Derb wrote, and it’s absurd — and frankly, it is a racist statement.
I think we are in a civil war in this country, because of race, but I don’t think we need to give into the war. We need to end the war.
The trophy-hunting, and the accusations of racism if they are not encouraged, are real, and you were wise to warn your daughter.
It is a simple fact that I have been harassed by black men quite a bit, and that they do so in a way that’s more....I don’t know, predatory?.....than white men. That’s thirty years of my experience, and it might be uncomfortable and un-PC, but there it is. A black guy sneered at me once, “What’s the matter? Don’t you like the black meat?”
I’m in my 40s and I still see it. Just the other day, I was doing some shopping in Kroger, and there were two young black guys in the front of the store, with the baggy pants down around their hips, and one of them was dancing, with no regard for the people who were trying to get around him. Of course no one had the nerve to speak up-—might seem racist. I needed to get past, so I said sharply, “Watch out!” and walked between them so they had to move. One of the guys muttered something, but all I could make out was “Hey baby, why don’t you-—”and then a security guard walked up and they moved on.
It’s a fact of life, and I’m not going to pretend it isn’t so that I can seem more tolerant.
Congratulations!
You’ve earned your Politically Correct Merit Badge.
They've hated him since he opposed the Iraq war. This is a way to silence him for good and ruin his career with a nasty smear. Like they did Joe Sobran.
By the way - he actually served in the military. He's not Rich and Jonah's type.
Well put, Sir!
Bingo.
Bermuda used to be such a place.
But the murder rate increased by a factor of ten in the last decade, no idea why.
Derbyshire’s decades old anecdote about the theme park was silly; his tone was offensive in much of the essay.
But the sad truth is, we are often not talking about the actions of “a few.” When one third of Baltimore’s young black men are under the supervision of the criminal justice system, that is, awaiting trial, in jail, or on probation, and there are others who have never been caught or who have served their time, we are not talking about a few, a small fraction.
Granted that some of that number might be innocent and unfairly charged or convicted. Granted that some of that number might not have committed crimes against persons or property - just smoking marijuana perhaps - although that is such a small offense an over-worked criminal justice system tends to let it go.
It is not a small number, and Baltimore is not the only city with a similar fraction of young black men with criminal histories.
#2 NR fires Derbyshire.
Yes, government education and the “teachers” unions have played a major role, but it isn’t limited to blacks. They are destroying everyone’s children. It is worse for black children because of the special pathologies of black culture.
Which one of these is silly?
Stabbing at National Zoo During African American Family Day
Teen fights, especially among girls, force early closure of north Alabama water park
Police Shut Down Wave Country Due To Unruly Crowd
There are many others to choose from...
Take Derbyshire’s advice and find another store to shop in that doesn’t tolerate that kind of intimidating behavior and let the management of the store know the reason you’re leaving.
