Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez wept and asked God to spare his life during a pre-Easter Mass on Thursday after returning from his latest session of cancer treatment in Cuba.
Very little is known about the 57-year-old socialist leader's condition, including even what type of cancer he has. Chavez has undergone three operations in less than a year, and received two sessions of radiation treatment. He says the latest surgery was successful, that he is recovering well and will be fit to win a new six-year term at an election in October. Yet big questions remain about his future, and on Thursday the strain appeared to show. In a televised speech to the Catholic service in his home state of Barinas, Chavez cried and his voice broke as he eulogised Jesus, revolutionary fighter Ernesto "Che" Guevara and South American independence hero Simon Bolivar.
"Never forget that we are the children of giants ... I could not avoid some tears," the former soldier said, his parents and other relatives looking on from the church rows. "Give me your crown, Jesus. Give me your cross, your thorns so that I may bleed. But give me life, because I have more to do for this country and these people. Do not take me yet," Chavez added, standing below an image of Jesus with the Crucifix.

Agreed. There have been a lot of people through history who should have died. Very often one man is the spark of movements that kill millions. Mao, Lenin, etc. Sure they are movements made of many individuals but it is usually that one figure that is the spark and the glue that hold it together.
Chavez had better be sucking up to satan instead, for that is who his new landlord will be.
No, you are correct. It’s good to see a thug such as Chavez petition God for help. It’s a measure of his fear that drives him.
while theres breath, there is hope of repentance, and that's between him and God, once you pass over your judgment is set. No one goes to hell for sinning, they are condemned for not availing themselves of the recompense that God has provided when he provided himself.
We were directly shown how the thief repented on the cross, and Jesus told him “today you will be with me in paradise’
Only my opinion, but in the very last minutes of his life, the thief probably helped more people than some of the most well known bible teachers in history
having said all of that, i have no illusions about Chavez. What he really needs is a miracle, but not for his body, for his soul. Fortunately God is in the miracle saving business.
Seems that Chavez has found his foxhole.
hmmmm... words fail me.
oh wait, no they don’t - DIE ALREADY you P.O.S!
I’d recommend that Hugo not buy any large jars of mayonnaise or any green bananas.
Yeah, that’s it. Lump in Che with Jesus. You will go far my son...into the depths.
Huh. Last I heard most of us do eventually die. So then it is really a matter of timing NOT - “sparing” from death.
Apparently, Hugo was reading the musings of Marx when he could have been reading something more useful.
You never know. God might help Hugo stick around long enough to see his dictatorial-socialistic “utopia” crumble.
Cheer up Hugo, Michael Moore and Sean Penn will be at your funeral.
That’s the Christian spirit!
How different from "Father take this cup from me but not my will but yours be done".
RememberGod works in mysterious ways. Maybe Hugo would become an icon of what God wants us to be.
Wouldn’t that make headlines?
“When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.”
-Proverbs 21:15
I would not be at all surprised if this was another one of his scams. If he found out that he was in remission, maybe now he’s playing the populist card by showing the peasants that God is on his side and answers his prayers.
Christ was quite the oddball wasn’t he? Love your enemies? Like C.S. Lewis said he was either the Savior of the world or a lunatic. It’s Easter. But for Jesus, my fate is the same as a Chavez that does not repent. Amazing grace.
You said it perfectly.
