Searchers on Saturday found the body of renowned long-distance runner Micah True, who vanished four days earlier after heading out from a lodge for a morning run in the rugged wilderness near New Mexico's Gila National Forest.
The body was discovered in a remote area of the Gila Wilderness, state police spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald said.
The cause of death was still unknown, but there were no signs of trauma, incident commander Tom Bemis said. "It's too early to say, there was nothing obvious," he told the Boulder Daily Camera.
The 58-year-old True, whose extreme-distance running prowess is detailed in the book "Born to Run," set out on what -- for him -- would have been a routine 12-mile run Tuesday from The Wilderness Lodge and Hot Springs, where he was staying. He left his dog at the lodge and never returned. A search began the next day after.

Heres a great running program for beginners, Couch to 5K. In just 2 months ...
But first - I strongly urge anyone over 21 y/o to see your doctor before starting any rigorous training program.

Im not trying to be rude here but all you folks that are implying this guy was self-centered or some how dumb or stupid because he set out on a wilderness run by himself are greatly misinformed. Micah True running 12 miles on trails where he logged literally thousands of miles running is like a majority of us here walking to our mailboxes to check the mail. Every once in a while stuff just happens - my bet a heart attack. Rest in peace fine Sir - you died a legend.

I’ve run daily (or almost daily), 3 to 5 miles, for years, but I’ve never heard of this guy. I guess I just don’t follow the fads of the industry. I also run alone, don’t like races (I’ve been in a few, no marathons), always wear shoes. At age 55 I’ve never had any problems, other than my shirt rubbing my nipples raw and I’ve tripped and fallen a few times.

‘Not exercising kills a hell of a lot more.’
We all die in the end, but when I go there will be a reason. I would hate to be the old ‘jock’ in the Hospital, dying of nothing.

Heart attack most likely. Happened to Jim Fixx. Runners have hearts that are rock hard. Theres little capacity for blood. Thats why long distance running is so bad for you. Any sudden jolt, scare or movement that would require a quick rush of blood can kill.huh? "Rock hard" hearts. This is an April Fool post, right?

God I love that area
Don't tell anyone it's there
Thank you for that wonderful picture

How Jim Fixx died isn’t as important as what he left behind. His book “Jim Fixx’s Complete Book of Running” is a classic. It was written over 30 years ago, but very little of it is outdated.
Another great running author is Dr. George Sheehan who wrote about the philosophy of running. His book “Going the Distance: One Man’s Journey to the End of His Life” is a journal he kept when he was diagnosed with prostrate cancer. He died at 74, after running for 35 years.
If you are a beginning runner, any book by John Bingham will help you. His books “The Courage to Start”, “No Need for Speed” and “Running for Mortals” are all inspiring.

My wife's family has one of those little “line-shack” places looking down at the base from the west. In fact, I think theirs is the last row with nothing between their 5 acres and the base. Have sat out there many a night plinking cans and watching the sunsets. The firework shows were always pretty good too.

I have had many VIVID dreams about long distance running (TRUE). I almost wake up sweating. I can't wait to get that second wind, after which I can run effortlessly forever.
Ahh, the only way to run! No clothes or shoes required!
Then, I wake up in my water bed, get up and move to my easy chair, my wife brings me food, my lap dogs smother me with love, and I watch TV. The good life, no exercise required.
I'm 62, by the way. I made it 4 years longer than that guy already. I'm healthier, I'm alive, he's DEAD. No disrespect intended.

He was fully aware of that and ignored his own symptoms for quite a while. But what really killed Fixx was bad luck. He had his heart attack while running and fell to his knees, leaning against a large rock outcropping. His heart wasn't strong enough to maintain blood flow. Had he fallen flat on his face (or his back), he might have survived.where are you getting these medical "facts" about blood flow and body position as it relates to heart attack survival. Fixx had a huge family history of familial elevation of cholesterol with a father that had a heart attack in his 30's and Fixx was 50 pounds overweight and smoked a couple of packs a day before he started running.

You're lucky to be alive. Seriously.
When nausea sets in, you're looking at heat exhaustion. If something isn't done, the next step is heat stroke, which is in many cases fatal.
I'm glad your "walk" into the desert turned out OK. Sad to say, that's not always the case.

Soooooo, the defense of your ignorant post is name calling? LOL ...
I've been running for over 30 years, including three (Marine Corps) marathons.
My 65 y/o heart is just fine, so I don't need to read your book. Obviously, you can't say the same. TFB.

The Freeper Wet Blanket Crowd never ceases to amaze me.
If you don't like running, don't run.
I love it. I have had some of the deepest discussions about faith, family and life while on long runs with my closest friends. I have seen some beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I feel great. Lost weight and hope to keep running for many years to come.
I love seeing you 60+ers out running. I hope to be one of you some day.
