L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa calls for layoffs of city workers

LOS ANGELES - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said today he will call for layoffs of city workers as part of his budget to be released next month.

"We're going to lay off a large number of employees. I'm not going to say how many," Villaraigosa said during a speech to the City Administrative Officer Investors Conference at the Grammy Museum today.

The city's employee negotiating committee, which includes Villaraigosa and several City Council members, recently asked thousands of city workers to put off raises until the city's budget improves.

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana said this week the city's budget deficit for the next fiscal year is close to $220 million.

The budget, which comes out April 20, also will call for the city to lease its parking garages, Villaraigosa told the audience. City Council members previously rejected plans to privatize city parking lots.

The mayor said he will push to raise the retirement age for city workers to 67, vowing to put it before voters if not approved by the City Council.

The City Council Budget and Finance Committee is expected to hold extensive hearings to discuss the mayor's proposed budget after it is released.

The city charter requires the City Council to amend or approve the mayor's budget by June 1.

I grew up around Mexicans all my life but still don’t exactly know what it means. They just used to throw it around.

I don’t think it is flattering.

Shut down the entire corrupt city government, fire them all, and start over with just a few people who have enough common sense to balance simple budgets

Does that include the department of LGBT outreach? Every city needs one of those, especial LA. Where are the freaks going to find jobs? ;~))

It’s something about that person’s mother. I can’t remember.

“Tu puta (whore) madre” or “Chinga (screw) tu madre” was really bad.

In LA, 15 city council members from the San Fernando Valley to San Pedro control things.

BTW, it don't matter anymore if the inmates control the city from the 3000 block of Center Jail.

Fact is the city was used to massive tax revenues from decades...That revenue has been shrinking, the people and most businesses for the most part are broke, eating cheet, and have no mo money for them to confiscate.

I know and they know it too.

Where are the freaks going to find jobs?

Texas, maybe Louisiana?

Maybe a midnight train to Georgia.

Good. Something we agree on. But the City Council still has the final say.

Yeah, I left in 91’.

I was born and raised out there.

Once upon a time, in the far past, it was the ‘Golden State’.

As someone once said, the past is somewhere we can’t return. (I paraphrase.)

Everyone of those corrupt SOBs should be prosecuted and force to fill potholes on Figueroa after serving 30 years in the joint.

The city uses all the money it collects from the utilities and it goes directly to the general fund. Most of the water systems were developed from the 1920s-1950s depending where you live and never been updated. When you get rainy weather, a old pipe breaks and ends up causing a sinkhole in a middle of a major street.

They’ll start with the people who are only weeks from retirement.

No!
They'll start with police, fire fighters, librarians, road repair crews, and trash collectors...

They'll be sure that the unwashed masses feel the pain.
