Police: Zimmerman says Trayvon decked him with one blow then began hammering his head

With a single punch, Trayvon Martin decked the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who eventually shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old, then Trayvon climbed on top of George Zimmerman and slammed his head into the sidewalk several times, leaving him bloody and battered, authorities have revealed to the Orlando Sentinel.

That is the account Zimmerman gave police, and much of it has been corroborated by witnesses, authorities say.

Zimmerman has not spoken publicly about what happened, but that night, Feb. 26, and in later meetings he described and re-enacted for police what he says happened.

In his version of events, he had turned around and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from behind, the two exchanged words then Trayvon punched him in the nose, sending him to the ground, and began beating him.

I’m not sure I completely understand all of your post, but let’s say you are the DA. Based on FACTS, what would you charge Mr Zimmerman with?

If either was holding the slide shut, there would be evidence to show it, as in damage to that hand.

Zimmerman got out of his SUV to follow Trayvon on foot.

Yes, but bear a few things in mind. He was on the phone with 911, had requested police assistance, given them his cell number for the police to call when he got there, and was expecting them at any minute. He didn't necessarily get out to stalk or confront Martin. It's more likely that he wanted to keep him in view until the cops got there. Martin originally, upon seeing Zimmerman, turned and walked in his direction, before turning away. That's confrontational, and it makes sense that he might have repeated the gesture a minute or so later, when both were in the alleyway, out of sight.

I believe punching someone in the nose is first degree assault. So much for the good boy who just walked away theory.

If Trayvon had no marks on his body other than the fatal gunshot wound and Zimmerman had a bloody nose and a laceration on the back of his skull Trayvon probably started the fight. Trayvon couldn’t attack after being shot. For it to be otherwise we have to believe Zimmerman attacked hand to hand (while carrying a loaded gun), missed totally, had his ass handed to him, and then shot.

while we can speak to Zimmerman’s state of mind, it’s not so easy to do so with Martin now . He had a rough 2012 so far, now it’s a complete loss. If he felt like he was being tailed.. or ‘oppressed’ again.. wellll..

I can understand in high crime areas how some are ready to do what they have to to defend themselves, but.. is this a case of just let the system do its job and maybe he should have just kept driving.. I again go back to precipitating events and better judgment being lacking.. on both parties.

"Crime Watch volunteers are NOT supposed to carry a weapon."

Just curious as to why someone who wants to watch over their neighborhood has to suspend their personal rights in order to do so?

Is this some kind of law or just your opinion?

Zimmerman was said to have a damaged hand, during the discussion about why the chamber didn’t reload. Of course the reports are leaking out in strange ways, so I don’t know if this—or anything else—is true or not. But it sounded reasonable, I thought.

“Read around here a bit...there are a few FReepers contorting themselves into a pretzel to make Zimmerman look like a murderer.

It’s more than a few, and they display an I.Q. equivalent to Al Sharpton.”

I think some of them were trying to support the idiotic statement by Rick Santorum. The others are just Al Sharpton clones.

I would like to know if the following also actually including a confrontation, a sharing of words.. stalking is a crime there,, I think.. This is maybe more overzealous policing perhaps.

Hopefully the cops did a powder swab of both the shooter and victim. That will help determine where body parts were
when the primer touched off the powder.

In my experience they swabbed under the eyes, ears, hands and other clothed body parts and neatly labeled them all.

They have ways around that—they just say “ongoing investigation” and poof, records cannot be accessed. Let’s hope they don’t do this. I think the longer the facts are withheld, the more it festers.

George Zimmerman should be charged with successfully protecting his neighborhood from a violent criminal.

When Zimmerman got out of his SUV and followed Trayvon a short distance Trayvon took off running into the darkness. He told the 911 operator this and said he was headed back to his vehicle. It looks like Trayvon doubled back around one of the condos and started the confrontation according to Zimmerman and witnesses. If FL has any stalking statutes I don’t think it can apply here in this case. Any FReepers here with a more informed opinion on that?

Define “overzealous policing.”
