The shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin last month in Florida, at the hands of a member of the local neighborhood watch, has been sparking outrage across the nation, including Chicago, where protesters and public officials spoke out about the shooting over the weekend.
Martin, who was unarmed, was killed in Sanford, Fla., last month by community watch representative George Zimmerman, who has claimed he acted in self-defense.
No charges have been approved in the death of the teen, which occurred nearly a month ago.
The shooting has placed increased scrutiny on Florida’s so-called “stand your ground” self-defense law, which was passed in 2005 and permits residents to use deadly force if they “reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.” ....
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said changes are needed in attitude and the law to prevent another shooting of the type that left Trayvon dead.
At an unrelated event on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus Saturday, Durbin said he has seen no justification for the shooting.
“The only weapon he was carrying was a bag of Skittles,” Durbin said. “The only thing that he could have done to raise suspicions was walk black.” ....
“This notion that anyone can carry a gun and declare themselves a security official and roam the streets of any town in America should be thought through carefully.” Durbin said. “This man who was involved in this had four months of training. I have no idea if it was any good or not. He wouldn’t even follow the directions of a dispatcher who said to leave this young man alone.”

Pretty sad occasion when a GOP politician (I’m looking at Santorum) is farther off the mark on a current event, than Dick Durbin is. At least Durbin said he wasn’t aware of any justification. Given the typically misleading media, I figure most people in the US, who have noticed this story, are unaware of the reality.

Last weekend in Chicago, a six year old girl was one of 10 people murdered and I don't remember hearing Durbin comment on that.
Liberals sure have made this their latest cause celebre, haven’t they?
I am perplexed and frustrated at how many people are weighing in without knowing all the facts.
A key fact is that this shooting happened a month ago, but only in recent days have the liberals decided to push this as evidence of how racist America is. They decided it fit a narrative of America being bigoted and gun loving and all that, so the MSM decided to go with the story.
Another fact is that the police investigated at the time of the shooting. A police report was compiled, and the result was that this was a shooting in self defense. Police reviewed evidence, including witness testimony, some of which hasn’t even been made public yet. Police made their determination as to the status of the change, and decided there was no evidence to press charges against Zimmerman.
The liberals are shooting off their mouths, ignoring the facts and evidence in the police report, and not even acknowledging that some facts have not yet been made public. How in the sam hill can Durbin say there is no justification for the shooting, when he doesn’t know all the facts????
I understand that a grand jury is going to review this case. Can we live up to our highest ideals of justice and all that, as liberals often urge us to do, in this case? Can we call off the Black Panther lynch mob as we let the system work in this case?
I do not want to weigh in on this until we know more. The public doesn’t know all the facts. Obama doesn’t know. Dick Durbin doesn’t know. Sharpton and Jackson don’t know.

Am I going nuts here or did we suddenly pass into the twilight zone? Black kids every-single-day get killed, usually by other black kids, so why is this kid getting all this attention? I might think that the fact that he was observed on top of Zimmerman punching him would raise suspicions, but then I'm not a Democrat.

I’m getting a little tired of idiots like Durbin running their mouths when they don’t know the facts. I know he has to cater to his African-American constituency, but he could be a little less obnoxious until he knows what actually happened. It’s hard to have an intelligent conversation about events when you have people making irrational emotional appeals.
The fact that George Zimmerman did not let Trayvon beat him to death proves he’s a racist.
Blame the clueless voters who keep sending idiots like Durbin, Sheila Jackson Lee, Diane Feinstein, Nancy Pelosi and the rest back to Washington. The fact that these fools keep getting elected is the greatest indictment of the failure of the education system in America I can imagine!
What’s happening is that the liberals have decided that this case is their latest cause celebre.
They have glommed onto this case because they think it fits their narrative that America is racist and bigoted, and bigots with guns are shooting poor defenseless black boys.
They don’t care about black kids getting killed by black youth gangs, because it doesn’t fit the liberal narrative of how evil America is.
