Whether one agrees with Santorum’s opinion or not, the real inexcusable error is the fact that it proves Santorum has a knack for unforced idiocy. What he said had zero potential for gain, and tremendous potential for misunderstanding, but he said it anyway. That’s just not very bright, and the hostile post-primary press will have field day after field day.

Exactly. When a candidate continues to make a whole series of unforced errors, you eventually are justified in asking--does this guy really want to win, or just want to shoot his mouth off.
