Santorum on defensive as race turns to Louisiana

Facing heightened pressure to revive his presidential bid, Rick Santorum was forced to explain another apparent misstep as he courted Louisiana voters Friday, the eve of a critical contest in a Republican nomination battle that increasingly favors Mitt Romney.

Santorum said he would support the eventual GOP nominee - if it isn't him - despite what he insists are similarities between front-runner Romney and President Barack Obama that make them indistinguishable on some issues. He caused an intraparty uproar earlier in the week after suggesting he'd prefer a second term for Obama over a Romney presidency.

"I've said repeatedly and will continue to say, I'll vote for whoever the Republican nominee is and I will work for him," Santorum said as he walked back his original comments less than 24 hours before Louisiana polls were set to open. "Barack Obama is a disaster, but we can't have someone who agrees with him on some of the biggest issues of the day."

The situation underscored Santorum's challenges ahead of a Louisiana contest he's favored to win. Santorum has had success in the South, having won last week's contests in Alabama and Mississippi. Regardless of the outcome Saturday, however, Romney will have collected more delegates than his opponents combined as the race then turns to more favorable territory in the coming weeks.

Santorum's continued missteps are complicating a candidacy already struggling to overcome major financial and organizational deficiencies. Before losing this week's Illinois primary, Santorum hurt himself by declaring that neither the economy nor the nation's unemployment rate was his top concern.

"I think the biggest development of the last 24 hours was Sen. Santorum's remarkable mistake in suggesting that re-electing President Obama was acceptable under any circumstance," Republican contender Newt Gingrich told reporters in Port Fourchon, La. (snip)

Go ahead and try to get me zotted—we have both been here 12 years—I'll let the mods and JR decide...

...your partisan and irrational attacks on the best hope for America aka Rick Santorum—the only real treat to Mitt and Obama—though I like Newt—will bear me out.

Whether one agrees with Santorum’s opinion or not, the real inexcusable error is the fact that it proves Santorum has a knack for unforced idiocy. What he said had zero potential for gain, and tremendous potential for misunderstanding, but he said it anyway. That’s just not very bright, and the hostile post-primary press will have field day after field day.

You’re right. I don’t have any proof other than a month or two’s worth of circumstantial evidence - your manic efforts to bring down the only guy in this race who’s in reach of the nomination - besides Willard.

Oh, but don't disagree with the Santuckabee fanatics, you will get severely flamed and denigrated as a “Romneybot”.

You are correct that the Press will and IS having a field day at all of Santorum’s countless gaffs. And DON'T YOU DARE, point that out.

Grasping at straws, did any of the ladies have fish net hose on so you could say there might have been a hooker in the crowd. Unbelievable!

"Santo is grandstanding again, trying to get the NRA loyals to identify for him. It was a typical Santorum photo op (Iowa Pheasant hunt, not for his pure love of the sport, but a pathetic display for political gain.)"

This is what I think, as well. I can't help but contrast it with Rick Perry's GENUINE love of guns. He did his shooting on his off time, not to pander for votes. Santorum's effort just doesn't come across as the real thing.

Exactly. When a candidate continues to make a whole series of unforced errors, you eventually are justified in asking--does this guy really want to win, or just want to shoot his mouth off.

This article is full of lies about Santorum. Santorum NEVER said he would vote for Obama if Romney were the nominee. What he said was that if the Republicans nominate a candidate who is almost exactly like Obama voters might choose Obama. This media falsehood is an attempt to distract from the Romney adviser’s etch-a-sketch comments.

Santorum reiterated that he would support the Republican candidate. He did not “backtrack”. I am tired the the constant media lies about Santorum and his supposed gaffes.
I am also tired of FReeprers, who should no better, mindlessly parroting the media narrative about Santorum being dumb etc.

You of all people know the result of a Santorum nomination against Obama. Neither candidate is valid. I do not vote out of desperation. I vote for who I know is the best choice
and that choice for me is Newt Gingrich. As long as he is in the race, that is who I support.

Your man doesn't stand a chance, and you know it. All you're doing is helping guarantee a Willard victory.

The question is, do you know that or not?

When Bachmann was the front runner, she made a 'series of unforced errors', as did Cain, as did Perry, as did Newt, as is Santorum.

And Newt will get the same treatment AGAIN should he by some miracle overtake Santorum.

Only Willard gets a relative pass.

Are you seriously gonna tell me you you don't see the pattern here?

It is what it is. Santorum has been taken out of context but the MSM will continue to do what it does best.

You act like that is my fault. If Santorum were a viable and dynamic politician, he would know what to say and how to say it. Instead, he blabbers off these ridiculous and numerous gaffs which the Press is making extreme examples of.

This is not the first time Santorum has opened his over sized mouth and promptly planted both of his size 11’s simultaneously. He has repeatedly done this time after time. It's like he is incapable of learning or something. His advisers must be tearing their hair out by now.

Is Santorum dumb? You can answer that question yourself, by simply taking a realistic look at what I outlined above.

If this is who you are convinced will be the nominee, AND be the most likely to win against Obama and the Billion dollar machine, supported by the Federal Treasury, then you need to seriously revisit your own mental capacity.

Santorum has been taken out of context

No he wasn't. He said what he said.

His entire speech has been run over and over, ad nauseum.

That is context.

Right, it's no coincidence that Santuckabee is seen at these little displays during certain key elections. Especially were the population is heavily NRA or Pheasant Hunting oriented.

The same thing backfired on Kerry in 2004. The obvious is all to prevalent.

” If somebody held a gun to your head and said either choose Rick, Mitt or Obama what would you say?”

That’s ridiculous, sounds like kids in the schoolyard.I’m saving the whole argument about holding my nose or voting 3rd party until it becomes necessary. If Santorum and Newt are out today then today is the day to start that discussion. The reason they want that discussion today is to promote Romney’s inevitability. That discussion shouldn’t happen until after the convention, if at all.

"Answer post 15 please."

Why?

The other night, after Romney won Illinois, some hysterical Santorum supporter--can't recall who it was---implied that all who failed to immediately get on board Santorum's bus were closet Romney plants. Are you trying to advance that ridiculous POV?

Do a detailed search of my posts. Get back to me if you find even one that HINTS of being a Romney supporter, and post it so everyone can see. Otherwise, please don't waste my time with such lunacy.

What was Rick doing at a range with a crowd? Is he touched?

snip
Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum fired a few rounds at the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office Rifle Range on Friday morning before taking verbal jabs at his opponents during a public rally in which he described himself as the only candidate who can provide a “clear contrast” to President Barack Obama.

After demonstrating his marksmanship with a .45-caliber semiautomatic Colt pistol, Santorum talked to a crowd of a few hundred Ouachita Parish residents about his plans to lower energy prices, produce more jobs and limit government.
