The death almost a month ago of 17-year old Trayvon Martin at the hands of appointed neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman has become a cause célèbre that has even drawn the notice of our President, who notes that if he had a son he would probably look like Trayvon. I’m seeing some defending Zimmerman, and most demanding his head on a platter, and a whole lot of people who don’t understand how the justice system is geared to approach these things. As I’ve said earlier in this blog, in answer to reader query, we don’t know enough about what happened to rush to judgment yet, whether that judgment is justified self-defense, murder, or manslaughter. The police have made it clear that there is evidence that has not yet been made public, and may not be put forth until the Grand Jury examines the case next month. Some issues: The autopsy results, including toxicology screen, have not yet been released. If it turns out that the young man who died was fueled by drugs known to cause violent behavior, could that change our perceptions? That knowledge is not yet in our hands. (Reportedly, Zimmerman was not tested, and police indicate that he showed no signs of drug or alcohol impairment.) My advice to YOU if YOU’RE ever involved in a shooting: request to be taken to a hospital to have a blood sample and toxicology screen taken. A “negative for everything” result will prevent false allegations later that you were drunk or drugged-up when you pulled the trigger.

Witnesses said Martin attacked Zimmerman, even broke his nose. At some point Zimmerman acted, but if he didn’t would Martin have beaten Zimmerman to death? He appeared to be well on the way to it.

What happened before the attack? A young high school athelete high on teenage adrenalin is walking home at night, minding his own buissness and eating some candy. Some short pudgy guy is shadowing him. The guy shadowing him OBVIOUSLY isn’t a cop and isn’t in uniform. The guy shadowing him is a cop-wannabe. Martin had NO IDEA who Zimmerman was.
My take of the scenario is just that. At some point, Martin got ticked off at this guy following him, confronts him, Zimmerman accuses Martin of looking suspicious, Martin gets even angrier, clocks Zimmerman and knocks him to the ground pummeling him, and Zimmerman draws his gun and blows away Martin.
That is just my GUESS based on what has been revealed already.
BOTH of these people have backgrounds indicating less than desirable behavior. Zimmerman was TOLD by the dispatcher NOT to follow Martin. Martin was NOT threatening ANYONE and not doing ANYTHING apparently illegal. Besides,Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch captain, NOT a cop. And if Martin, a 6’3” football player had beaten Zimmerman so badly, WHY did Zimmerman refuse medical care afterewards?
At ANY rate, that is the way I see it right now.
As I DID SAY, trying people in the media is wrong. Zimmerman should have been arrested under the circumstances and should be facing trial. A trial would clear the air and bring forth ALL the evidence to exculpate or indict Zimmerman.
The reason the cops were reluctant to arrest Zimmerman, IN MY OPINION, is Zimmerman had a long record of this kind of behavior, the cops KNEW it, and the FAILED to discourage him.
The law allows somebody, justly, to use deadly force to protect himself against an attacker or his home or family.
I don’t believe it should cover some HOT DOG who eggs on a needless confrontation with somebody else then blows him away when the situation isn’t going his way.
And I beleive THAT is the issue a court will have to determine. Did Zimerman cause the confrontation and was he in real danger of loss of life.
My PERSONAL interest in this is the threat this kind of action poses towards MY right to keep and bear arms, have a carry permit and be able to rationally defend myself, my home and my family against a legitimate attacker.
The ability to discuss this rationally has now been seriously compromised because of the actions of black racist like Spike Lee, Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton AS WELL AS the apaprent acations WHITE racists like a very few of the people in this forum and elsewhere.
