"The portrayal of George Zimmerman in the media, as well as the series of events that led to the tragic shooting, are false and extremely misleading," his father, a retired magistrate judge, wrote in a letter published in the Orlando Sentinel. "Unfortunately, some individuals and organizations have used this tragedy to further their own causes and agendas."
"George is a Spanish-speaking minority with many black family members and friends," Robert Zimmerman wrote. "He would be the last to discriminate for any reason whatsoever."

I have not personally done so. But I have read enough to know that the facts are still in dispute. What has been revealed, coupled with the racist attitudes on display make it tough to defend Mr. Zimmerman.

Zimmerman did not witness any criminal behavior by Martin. Looking around at houses in a neighborhood you are unfamiliar with is not outside the range of normal innocent behavior. Zimmerman certainly was not in any danger of harm or being killed when he called police to report Martin.

I have read the police reports and listened to the 911 calls. The witnesses told police that Trayvon attacked him and fired in self defense. If the witnesses had seen it happen the other way around Mr. Zimmerman would be in jail.

There are witnesses who contradict what Zimmerman told the police. I have listened to the 911 tapes and it sure as heck sounds like Martin howling, crying on the tapes.
I can find no witness statements that Zimmerman was jumped.

The problem with this theory is that Zimmerman had time to detain Trayvon Martin, if that was his intent, while he was observing him. Instead, he maintained his observational distance and was on the phone with Police.
Let’s seewhat the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) of Florida has to say. “The alleged action of a ‘self-appointed neighborhood watchman’ last month in Sanford, FL significantly contradicts the principles of the Neighborhood Watch Program,” NSA Executive Director Sheriff Aaron D. Kennard, said in the press statement. “NSA has no information indicating the community where the incident occurred has ever even registered with the NSA Neighborhood Watch program.”

In addition, the non-emergency call Zimmerman placed on February 26 before the shooting revealed he had been pursuing Martin by car before accosting the youth on foot — all direct violations of Neighborhood Watch policies.
Truth is a defense against slander. I didn’t say all FReepers, but there are too many to count that are obviously driven by racist beliefs.

It’s news to me that a neighborhood watch person has any authority to ‘detain’ anybody. I’m all for letting this case go to court, assuming there is an indictment, and withold NAACP conviction. WHY this bozo thought it was proper to do anything other than calling in the cops for cop work I can’t fathom. It’s called neighborhood WATCH, not neighborhood SHOOT.
