Ever since his CPAC Keynote Address in 2010, Rep. Allen West (R-FL) has been one of the gold standards of modern American political conservatism. He has also been widely hailed as a political model for conservative African American politicians. And now, following recent revelations surrounding the highly suspicious shooting of Trayvon Martin, Rep. West has joined a growing bipartisan consensus calling for the case to be reopened, possibly even with Federal assistance. Wests statement, put out today by Talking Points Memo, resonates with controlled fury (emphasis added):
itself in Sanford, Florida involving the shooting of 17-year-old Treyvon Martin. First of all, if all that has been reported is accurate, the Sanford Police Chief should be relieved of his duties due to what appears to be a mishandling of this shooting in its early stages. The US Navy SEALS identified Osama Bin Laden within hours, while this young man laid on a morgue slab for three days. The shooter, Mr Zimmerman, should have been held in custody and certainly should not be walking free, still having a concealed weapons carry permit. From my reading, it seems this young man was pursued and there was no probable cause to engage him, certainly not pursue and shoot him
.against the direction of the 911 responder. Lets all be appalled at this instance not because of race, but because a young American man has lost his life, seemingly, for no reason. I have signed a letter supporting a DOJ investigation. I am not heading to Sanford to shout and scream, because we need the responsible entities and agencies to handle this situation from this point without media bias or undue political influences. This is an outrage.

It was stated up-thread that Martin was walking towards his destination, still on the phone with his girlfriend, when Zimmerman caught up to him. Martin's last words, which she heard, were addressed to Zimmerman: "Why are you chasing me?"
How do we know that Martin didn’t see or feel the firearm during the struggle?
We don’t. But I think that’s starting to reach quite a bit.
No, not chasing.
“Trayvon said, ‘What, are you following me for?’ and the man said, ‘What are you doing here?’ Next thing I hear is somebody pushing, and somebody pushed Trayvon because the head set just fell. I called him again and he didn’t answer the phone.”
Then the line went dead, she said.
Zimmerman is the one that mentioned the mailboxes first. After he disengaged the chase with Martin, the 911 dispatcher asked him if he wanted to meet with officers and Zimmerman said yes. The dispatcher asked him where he was going to be and that's when Zimmerman gave him directions to the mailboxes. Actually, he said a past the mailboxes, and that's where his truck is. The dispatcher then asked him what residence he's parked in front of and Zimmerman said he didn't know the address. The dispatcher asked him if he lived in the area, he responded yes, and asked him his apartment number. Zimmerman then said it was a home and started to give the address, stopping short of naming the street, worried that he didn't want to give that information out, probably over the phone.
There is hesitation throughout the call, which is normal for situations like this. I think your imagination is running wild here because there nothing to indicate that Zimmerman was being deceitful or otherwise calculating.
It reads to me that all the information isn't there as you claim......What you have posted is merely the initial report.........
What about media reenactments of the shooting incident?
"Any media reenactments of the shooting incident are purely speculation. To date the Sanford Police Department has not released any rendition of the events of the evening to anyone other than the Office of the State Attorney."
His father is not going to drive him a couple of blocks, when they live in a reasonably safe neighborhood and it’s only a bit after 7pm.
I’m sure the father thought that nothing would happen to his son in the approximate 20 minutes he’d be gone.
First of all, I don't think it was a 911 call. It was a call to the SPD dispatch. He was talking directly to the police. Second, there is nothing in the phone call that indicates Zimmerman confronted Martin. In fact, the opposite is true. During the call Zimmerman tells the police dispatch that he doesn't know where Martin is.
When it is raining? I would... It was .7 miles away.

I've read that report and there is nothing in it that suggests Zimmerman initiated the confrontation which is why I asked you upon what evidence you were basing your statement.
You appear to be an irrational, uncivil person.
Not only are you swearing at and calling me names
but worse You are advocating the lynching of Mr. Zimmerman...
Too bad the kid just couldn't peacefully walk back to the apartment without being pursued by a wannabe cop. According to the incident report the shooting occured in the walkway behind 2831 Retreat View Court.
In what way? Do you suggest that a firearm is unlikely to be felt by the other person during a struggle? Is it known where the firearm was located on Zimmerman? Anyway, I should have been asleep hours ago. I’ve got to get up in three hours to go to work. I appreciate your civility as we’ve discussed this case. I hope this turns out in some positive way, but I fear things will degenerate as a result of all the race-baiting from the Al Sharptons out there. However, this turns out, it’s a tragedy for all involved.
Actually, if you listen carefully, Zimmerman hesitates to give his full address because he "doesn't know where he is". Which then begs the question how could Zimmerman confront Martin when he admittedly doesn't know where he is?
Zimmerman told dispatch that the kid was running and he wasn’t going to let the kid run. The only reasonable conclusion I can draw is that Martin wasn’t looking for a confrontation, but Zimmerman was, probably to apprehend the kid for the cops. The fact that the girlfriend is able to testify that Martin asked Zimmerman why he was following him strongly suggests Zimmerman was not in retreat mode by any means and Zimmerman had managed to locate Martin.
Maybe Allen West ought to read a little more:

Likewise. Sleep well.
But he sure found him, didn't he? Zimmerman left his vehicle on the road and followed him on foot down the walkway.
I have a different translation. From a post I made elsewhere....
"I've been thinking about 'we don't need you to follow him'.
I can't imagine a situation where the police would advise a citizen to "follow" anyone.
Even if the police would very much appreciate you doing so in order that they would know where to look for the reported individual,
it would leave them wide open for liability if, as likely happened in this case, the concerned citizen were to be attacked.
It would explain why the concerned citizen wasn't instructed to NOT follow but only advised they didn't need him to."
Light rain? Daylight? When a kid his age has chosen on his own to go down to the store for candy? And is also using the time to talk to his girlfriend on the phone?
