WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales will be charged with 17 counts of murder and six counts of assault and attempted murder related to a March 11 shooting spree in Afghanistan, a senior U.S. defense official said Thursday.
The charges are expected to be announced Friday. The official could not explain why the count is now 17, when 16 have been reported killed in the incident.
Bales' lawyer, John Henry Browne, told CNN that he did not respond to leaks and that he would not comment before seeing the charges against his client.

Lets just say he killed potential future combatants and call it good.
People who have never been over there have no idea what our forces are facing. Ever sliding mission, rules of engagement, constantly being second guessed, seeing fellow soldiers killed and maimed and for WHAT !
Every frickin one of those people want us dead! Iran is supporting the whole middle east violence with weapons, IED’s and their explosives experts.
Our President and our do nothing Congress and our Generals can’t even tell us why we are there.
We won WWII in half this time because we took off the gloves and kicked ass including civilian ass until they begged us to stop.
If it’s a WAR then Congress should declare war and lets get it on full scale !
America has forces and drones killing people in so many countries, are we at war with those countries ? Are we just green lighted to kill people anywhere we choose in the name of freedom now ?
Too many of ours dead. Too many wounded. Too many coming home needing help but kill themselves instead.”
Amen.
The people reacting against your anti-military garbage ARE the nice people.
You, who think it's good to kill innocent women and children, are the one with the problem.
A serious mental, emotional, spiritual problem.
Get help.
I doubt they have much. They won’t have autopsies, forensics, crime scene photos, ballistics, etc.
***I am all the more stupid for having read your moronic comment ... Please refrain from any further comments on this board as you may spread your foot-in-mouth disease...***
Firing squad? Really?
This is a soldier who suffered traumatic brain injury. Why wasn’t he back home being treated? Why was he sent back into combat? He saw his buddy’s leg blown off the day before. He snapped. I hope a brain injury/PTSD defense is offered and accepted.
We owe it to our soldiers to give them the very best treatment when they are injured in the line of duty. We damaged this guy. Then gave him a gun and sent him back into duty.
Now we want to kill him?
We will never know what really happened over there. No free press in this country, anymore.
Thank you for your service. Glad you got your sanity back.
Very few men can take that much action, and be impervious to mental damage.
Major Hassan is STILL awaiting trial, but this guy will be tried and convicted in a New York minute.
Something real damn fishy here.
” This man should never have been sent back a fourth time after suffering an injury. “
He may have some difficulty with that. From what I’ve heard the service was ready to discharge him after his injury and he petitioned to stay in. He had to appear before a medical board and convince them that he was fit for duty.
Traumatic brain injury covers a lot of ground. His brain injury was a mild concussion from a rollover accident, not a severe injury from an IED. There was no treatment needed. He was sent back into combat because he petitioned to be retained in the service and convinced a medical board that he was fit.
“His brain injury was a mild concussion from a rollover accident, not a severe injury from an IED”
Yet just tonight, I read that the roll over accident was caused by an IED.
Can we agree that the facts are dribbling in slowly and we don’t have all the facts yet?
This is interesting...
Even if Bales’s victim had pressed the claim, Bales had protection under laws that shield members of the military from some financial obligations.
Any active-duty member of the military can apply for relief from outstanding financial obligations as long as he or she makes less in the service than before, said John Odom, a retired Air Force colonel and a partner at the law firm of Jones & Odom in Shreveport, Louisiana.

All I have to say to you is.....from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your service to our country. God bless you.

Blessings? yes!
God Bless? yes!
Thank you??!!!! Sorry, no way!
This individual has single handedly undone a great deal of hard work by thousands of good soldiers, under the SAME conditions, who have acted with honor and valor. This was an act of DISHONOR that mars EVERY soldier who serves to protect this country. It’s true that we’re not over there we don’t know what they face or the terrible stress they are under, but tens of thousands of soldiers HAVE faced those conditions and did not become accused mass murderers!
To support this is just nuts. It’s like saying to Lee Harvey Oswald, Charles Whitmen, or Major Hasan...we know you are murderers but Thank you for your service to your country! Nuts! That’s what that is and so is every comment that minimizes the dishonorable conduct of this rogue soldier.
This is about MURDER! I cannot believe I’m reading all the supporting words here. The guy committed MURDER and there is no excuse for that! For the sake of our military, for the sake of international relations he needs to face a fair trial with the possibilities of facing the ultimate punishment. C’mon people this was just wrong what the man did, and IF found guilty there is NO excuse for it.
Too many posters flying off the handle on this thread IMO.
Mrs. Prince of Space
Um, yeah...I think that reply was to dadharry who served 3 tours in Vietnam, and it wasn’t about SSgt. Bales.
Too many posters flying off the handle on this thread IMO.
Then I do offer sincere apologies to dadharry! No disrespect!
Still stand by the overall statement in regards to those who seem to want to excuse or dismiss what this person did.
Here’s where I read it.
“Browne had earlier suggested that the Army should not have sent Bales to Afghanistan after he suffered a concussive brain injury on his third tour in Iraq after his vehicle hit an IED.”

Every one seems to be forgetting Major Nadal Hasan. It's been two years and no one is talking about the death penalty for him. Anyone remembers him? he gunned down several of his fellow troopers a few years back.
At least Bales was in a combat zone and could have snapped.
